Thanks to our friends from Wells Fargo, SFBF is $4,000 closer to meeting our $100,000 goal for Project Sojourner!

Zephanayah Belton and her mother dropped by on Halloween to scare up some candy from the staff.  We are so glad to see that this little goblin is on the mend.

To give thanks in solitude is enough.  Thanksgiving has wings and goes where it must go.  Your prayer knows much more about it than you do.

ROAD TRIP

Our friends from Easley Fire Department recently took a road trip to the Burn Foundation to present over $10,000 from the annual boot drive! During their visit they toured the Burn Center, Chavis House, and enjoyed lunch with the staff. Hats off to our heroes from Pickens County for what they do for the Burn Foundation, and for what they do every day!

A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. They can also burst into flight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.

GO BLUE!
Bobbie Jo Gainey enjoyed tailgating at Presbyterian College's Homecoming on October 13. The brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha presented her with a $904 donation from their 1st Annual Fireman's Challenge.

Caring by the Numbers

Scalds are the most common types of burns among young children. An average of 1,293 children ages 4 and under are hospitalized for burn related injuries each year.

Burn Prevention Tip

CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS, CHANGE YOUR BATTERY - As you change your clocks from daylight to standard time, be sure to change the batteries of your smoke alarms too.

November 2012

In this Thanksgiving edition, you will hear about some of the people for whom we give thanks.  Because of donors and volunteers like you, no needy patient is discharged from the hospital without their medication.  Because of donors like you, their families have a warm bed and a hot meal each day. A recent guest said it best, "Our experience at the retreat has been nothing short of a pleasant, miraculous, God sent gift."  We agree - our supporters are God sent!

Hope is Priceless
Our Faith Partners don't just bring a meal.  They bring hope.  Everyday, rain or shine, work day or holiday, these volunteers roll into the Chavis House and unload a hot meal that allows our guests to eat  lunch or dinner with each other.  Offering friendly smiles and words of encouragement, these volunteers unpack plates of fried chicken and other delicacies.  We recently honored nearly 200 of these dedicated chefs with a Faith Partners Appreciation Dinner.  It would be hard to replace them.   Food costs would be over $100,000 each year. If the Faith Partners stopped cooking, the families could find nourishment from a vending machine or the cafeteria, but we could never replace the hope that these folks bring to families.
We Give Thanks

I am thankful to have a healthy, supportive family that allows me to devote so much time to the care of our patients.
Beretta Craft-Coffman, P.A., JMS

My family, my peers, my profession, and my freedom of expressing my religion are all made more and more real for me each day.

Joe Palmer, Executive Director, SC Firefighters Association

I am so thankful that God blessed me with the most amazing woman I could have ever imagined.  We were so fortunate to have our friends and family together for our wedding this past October 20th.

David Bagwell, SFBF Board Member

Personally, I'm blessed to have healthy children and grandchildren.  Professinally, I'm grateful that we have the Burn Center and Burn Foundation in this area to take care of patients and families when catastrophic injuries occur.

Eddie Turner, Asst. Chief, Lexington County Fire Department

I am thankful for my wife and three daughters, the freedoms we enjoy in this country and to have the time to serve this great organization.
Ray Visotski, SFBF Board Member

I am thankful for the patients and families who entrust us with their treatment, recovery and lives. I am also blessed to have a loving family who understand the demands of the work we do.

Dr. Fred Mullins, Medical Director, JMS

I am grateful for the number of giving role models in our area who give without personal cost, with no expectation of return.  They teach all of us how to live, play and work-quite anonymously.
Marcie Wilhelmi, SFBF Board Member

I am thankful for my family, but most especially my daughters, their beautiful smiles, their never ending hugs, and their unconditional love.

Jennifer McCray, SFBF Office Manager

I am privileged to work with the youngest patients served by JMS. I am thankful to be able to participate in their care, for my supportive family and for the smiles on the faces of the children and families when they return.
Dr. Richard Cartie, JMS

I thank God everyday for my son, my job, my house, and my health.

Rachel Thorsen, Chavis House-Mother

Project Sojourner
During the final game of the World Series, 19 guests were staying at The Chavis House.  That doesn't sound like a big deal, unless you are one of those guests whose loved one is seriously ill.  It happens frequently.  While you and I are watching a movie, or going to work, or sitting down to dinner with our families - sojourners are checking in and out of SFBF's guest house.  They arrive night and day to their new home away from home.   That's why Project Sojourner is important.  After serving nearly 10,000 guests, we simply must refurbish the rooms.  Please consider a donation to help with this project.

Shop with a Doc

Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation will host the 8th Annual Shop with a Doc on December 4, at Target in Evans, GA.  Pediatric burn patients and their families will shop with their favorite doctors and caregivers, and visit with Santa! If you are interested in brightening the holiday season for a pediatric burn patient, contact Bobbie Jo Gainey at bgainey@sfbf.net.

Potash Corp

Edmond Thompson, Kevin Hyman, and Ceil Polk of Potash Corp presented SFBF with a $10,000 grant for Project Sojourner. During their visit they toured the Chavis House and visited with staff and guests. Thank you to our friends at Potash for their continued support of the Foundation's mission.

From the Heart...

Although my children won't be coming "over the river and through the woods" for Thanksgiving, I will be traveling over the Savannah River and through the North Carolina woods to spend time with them.  I love the eating, visiting, napping, football watching.  I love that Thanksgiving slows us down.  It causes us to reflect on our many blessings.  Traditions change, newcomers arrive, loved ones pass on, but the blessings continue to flow. The Burn Foundation wishes you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving.
