Brad Buchanan Appointed as City's New Planning Director

Mayor Hancock has announced the appointment of Brad Buchanan as executive director for Denver Community Planning and Development to replace Rocky Piro. In this capacity, Buchanan will be responsible for implementing the City's planning visions and ensuring safe, responsible, sustainable building throughout Denver. The Department of Community Planning and Development manages the planning and building process in Denver, developing and implementing citywide and neighborhood plans, establishing and enforcing construction and design standards, coordinating revitalization efforts, managing historic preservation, and performing code enforcement and education.

Buchanan comes from RNL, a design, planning, and architecture firm in Denver, where he was a principal and board member. He has served as Chair of the Denver Planning Board and the Downtown Denver Partnership. Brad was a member of the Downtown Denver Area Plan Steering Committee and the Denver Zoning Task Force that in 2010 successfully updated the Denver Zoning Code for the first time since 1956, establishing a form and context-based code, one of the first of its kind for a large city.

Brad is the founder of Freedom by Design, a nonprofit organization providing design and construction services for the disabled community. Since 1999, Freedom by Design has grown nationwide, completing hundreds of projects each year.

Brad has presented to more than 10,000 architects, engineers and contractors across the United States and abroad on the role of the architect as a leader in the design and construction process.   He co-authored the "Design Build Teaming Checklist" and "The Architect's Guide to Design Build." He was elevated to Fellowship by the American Institute of Architects in 2005.

Brad graduated with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Design from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. His first day on the job as Planning Director will be on March 3rd.

Residential Trash Cart Conversion Slated for Platt Park this Summer

Denver Public Works and Solid Waste Management are pleased to announce that Denver will begin implementing the strategy outlined in the Master Plan for Managing Solid Waste in the Mile High City in the Summer of 2014. One of the first steps in moving the plan forward will be the Residential Trash Cart Conversion. Under this program, we will convert about 20,000 households with community dumpster or manual trash collection to single-household trash service later this year.

The first round of cart conversions will happen in the Elyria, Swansea, Barnum, East Park Hill, Globeville, Westwood, East Colfax, Cory - Merrill, Platt Park, and Hale neighborhoods. Eventually, all households in the City will have single-household trash service.

In addition to improving the equity of services across the city and increasing collection efficiency, the cart conversion will provide many other benefits to residents including:

  • Decreased illegal dumping
  • Cleaner and safer alleys and neighborhoods
  • Increased recycling

To find out more about the residential trash cart conversion, including neighborhood maps and timeframes, visit www.DenverGov.org/SolidWastePlan.

Recycling Coming to Popular Denver Parks!

Denver Recycles and Denver Parks are pleased to announce that this spring visitors to two of the City's most visited parks, Washington Park and Cheesman Park, will be able to make a positive impact on the environment by recycling. Last year about 12,000,000 pounds of trash were thrown away in Denver's Parks. Help the environment and keep valuable recyclables out of our landfill by participating in this new recycling program.
  • Denver recycles will place more than a dozen specially designed purple recycling dumpsters in Washington and Cheesman Park in the Spring of 2014.
  •  Park visitors can recycle their plastic bottles and containers, aluminum cans, cardboard, paper, and other items in the purple recycling dumpsters.
  • Plastic bags, pet waste, Styrofoam, food and trash is not allowed in the recycling dumpsters.
  • Tell your friends, neighbors, and other park visitors about the purple recycling dumpster program and help make recycling a success in Denver's Parks.

While filling up the purple dumpsters with recyclables is the main goal of the program, it is also nearly important to keep trash out of the recycling dumpsters. If too much trash finds its way into the purple dumpsters, the program will be discontinued and recycling will not spread to other Parks in the City. Please help ensure the success of this pilot and pave the way for future recycling in other parks, by placing all of your recyclables in the purple dumpsters and by sharing the recycling message with other visitors to Denver's parks.
