Denver Begins First Police Academy Since 2008
Thanks to overwhelming support of Denver voters for Measure 2A last November, the Denver Police Department began its first police academy this month. This is Denver's first police academy since 2008, with a little more than 100 recruits vying for a spot in Denver's top-notch police force. Those recruits successfully graduating from the academy will improve the department's authorized strength for 2014, and provide a larger presence for the department around the City. Recruits will be in the Academy until the end of October, when they will be paired with an officer for further on-the-street training. Since its passage, Measure 2A has benefited Denver residents by increasing library hours, paving more streets, and now by putting more police officers in our neighborhoods. Thanks to the Denver voters, and their commitment to our City.

Trees for Trade-Ins
The "Trees for Trade-Ins" initiative from Colorado's Clear Air Foundation gets high polluting cars off the road and trees in the forest. How? For each of the first 250 old, dirty vehicles donated, the Clear the Air Foundation will fund a tree to be planted by ReForest Colorado. Trees improve air quality by absorbing pollutants. New vehicles produce a small fraction of the pollution emitted by old cars. Getting old cars off the road and planting trees is a winning combination for reducing ground-level ozone and dirty air. What's even better is that instead of reselling your old clunker, the "Trees for Trade-Ins" program will crush it and recycle the parts, so it won't pollute again. Click here if you are interested in participating.

Denver Parks & Recreation Encouraging Gardeners to "Purge The Spurge"
With the arrival of the spring season and the renewal of gardens and flower beds, Denver Parks & Recreation is warning residents to aggressively remove the noxious Myrtle spurge weed that may look harmless, but can cause harm to people and natural areas. To help combat Myrtle spurge, Denver Parks & Recreation's, Natural Areas Program has launched an educational outreach program for residents called "Purge the Spurge." Volunteers and staff canvass Denver's neighborhoods looking for myrtle spurge in yards and rights-of-way distributing informative hang-tags that encourage residents to remove it from their property.
To support Denver's citizens with the removal of this noxious weed from their yards, DPR will host two "Purge the Spurge" events where Denver residents can bring in bags of spurge or photos of it being removed in order to receive free native plants to replace it:
- May 19: The CSU Extension office in Denver will host the first event on at Harvard Gulch Park, 888 E. Illiff Ave. from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
- June 1: Denver Natural Areas Program will host the second event on Berkeley Lake Park from 9 am to 12 pm
What's so bad about myrtle spurge? It not only spreads rapidly and displaces native plants, but all parts of it are poisonous and its milky sap is a severe skin irritant. You can see what the myrtle spurge looks like by clicking here:

New Denver Homebuyer Program
If you are interested in buying a house, but worried about being house-poor afterwards, consider taking advantage of the Mortgage Credit Certificate program. The program enables qualifying borrowers to receive an annual federal income tax credit equal to 30% of the annual interest paid on their mortgage loan, up to $2,000 annually. That money can help offset some of the expenses that buying a new house brings. Additionally, lenders can use the estimated amount of the credit on a monthly basis as additional income to help a potential borrower qualify for a loan. Click here for more details.

Why Permits Matter
Now that winter is finally (we hope) over, construction season is upon us.You may be looking to undertake home improvement projects, but make sure your contractors obtain the proper permits. Here's why:
- Permits ensure that the person/company is qualified to do the work
- Permits ensure that an independent third party will inspect the work upon completion
- Permits ensure that your project is legal and zoning compliant
- Unpermitted work done by unqualified individuals could result in safety issues
- Unpermitted work is harder to defend by law if something goes wrong
- Unpermitted work could void your home insurance
- Unpermitted work makes it harder to sell or re-finance your house
Some small projects do not require a permit. Click here to find out if your project is exempt.
