Do you have questions about Denver Public School's (DPS) bond and mill levy initiatives and how they will impact you? Questions like:

  • Why is additional funding for DPS necessary?
  • What do each of the measures do?
  • How will the funds be allocated across the different schools in our community and across different programs in the system?

Whether you are a parent, a supporter of public education, a skeptic, or just a concerned citizen of Denver, the outcome of this initiative election will impact you, your neighborhood, and your city. Come learn more about it.

Learn More About Ballot Issues at Platt Park People's Association General Meeting - Tuesday 10/9

When: Tuesday, Oct 9, 6:30 p.m.
Where: Hope Community Church, 1801 S. Logan St.

Don't know much about the other ballot initiatives? Colorado State Senator Irene Aguilar, a Denver Democrat, and her Republican opponent, Roger Logan, will tell you what they know at the Tuesday, Oct 9, meeting of Platt Park People's Association at 6:30 p.m. This will be a great chance not only to learn more about statewide initiatives, but also about 2A, the measure Denver City Council put on the November ballot for voter approval to permanently and completely "de-Bruce" Denver.  "De-Brucing" refers to Douglas Bruce, the author of TABOR.  TABOR is the state constitutional amendment that was rejected by Denver voters but passed statewide in 1992.  TABOR established state-mandated revenue and expenditure caps on all governments throughout Colorado.  While most cities in Colorado have already De-Bruced, Denver has not yet done so.  If the Denver De-Brucing measure is approved, Denver will be able to keep almost $70 million it is already approved to raise through existing tax rates.  The de-Brucing measure does not authorize any tax rate increase, and all future tax increases must still be approved by voters.  The measure also specifies five key areas where the additional revenue will be spent: police and fire; street repairs; parks maintenance; public libraries; and programs for children and youth.

Rake, Reuse, & Recycle: 2012 Denver LeafDrop Program

Cherry Creek Transfer Station, 7301 E. Jewell Ave.

                        .
Weekday LeafDrops must be in tied or secured bags but weekend LeafDrops can be left untied. Save your plastic trash bags and our time by bringing your leaves in paper yard debris bags which, unlike plastic bags, can be composted with your leaves. Better still, bring your leaves in reusable containers or tarps that we can empty and give back. Click here
to find out when and where.

IMPORTANT: Leaves can only be dropped off at LeafDrop
sites during the designated times. We are trying to keep leaves off the street and out of the landfill. Many people are unaware that depositing a big bag of leaves at an unmanned LeafDrop spot is basically the equivalent of illegal dumping and completely defeats the purpose.

Click here for a list of citywide locations and other useful information. Remember, you can reclaim your leaves as compost at next spring's Treecycle Mulch Giveaway & LeafDrop Compost Sale.

Volunteers Needed for Washington Park's "Putting the Beds to Bed"

Washington Park has beautiful gardens but getting them ready for winter is a big job. Denver Parks & Rec can't do it alone and needs your help with the following tasks:

Removing annual flowers
Dragging tarps
Loading plants into trucks
Over-turning soil and digging dirt

To find out more and to sign up, email DPRVolunteers@DenverGov.org
 or call 720-913-0330.

Washington Park Southeast Entrance Improvements
If you run in Washington Park, look forward to more trail improvements by the end of December. Denver Parks and Recreation is widening the entry on the south end of the park to create a safer and less congested route. Construction will temporarily impact access at Louisiana Avenue and Franklin Street and at Louisiana Avenue and Gilpin Street. Plan to bypass the southeast corner and use the central park road.

Public Input Sought to Help Create Denver's "Be Healthy Denver" Plan

What are the primary health issues facing Denver residents? "Be Healthy Denver," Denver's comprehensive effort to create a five-year "Community Health Improvement Plan" (CHIP), will host a series of public meetings beginning in September to gather input on the city's health priorities.

"Be Healthy Denver" is a joint effort between Denver Environmental Health (DEH) and Denver Public Health (DPH).  In March 2012, "Be Healthy Denver " completed a community health assessment (Health of Denver 2011 Report) and is now looking for public input that will be used in the plan, scheduled to be complete by mid-2013.

In an effort to gather a diverse range of input, community meetings are scheduled in six areas of the city, including two dual English and Spanish meetings.  Kids activities and informational booths will begin approximately one hour prior to each meeting. Light refreshments will be provided:

  • Oct. 11 - Smiley Middle School, 2540 Holly St. (Childcare available)

    Meeting at 5:30 p.m., activities open at 4:30 p.m.

  • Oct. 13 - Abraham Lincoln High School, 2285 South Federal Blvd. (English/Spanish)

    Meeting at 11:30 a.m., activities open at 10:30 a.m.

Childcare is provided for meeting attendees at locations specified above. To take advantage of childcare, RSVP to Michele.Shimomura@DenverGov.org.To learn more about Be Healthy Denver, Denver's community health improvement plan, or to provide input, visit www.BeHealthyDenver.org.
