Principal Fagel: Reflections from the first year
Since becoming principal of Glenbrook South on July 1, 2015, Lauren Fagel has immersed herself in the Titan culture. Between visiting each and every department at Glenbrook South, taking center stage at the annual Variety Show and competing in a free-throw contest on behalf of the school, Principal Fagel has become a full-fledged Titan.
We caught up with our principal to ask about her first year.
What has your first year involved? I have spent a tremendous amount of time getting a feel for how GBS operates on a daily basis. For each department of the school, I observed individuals in their work settings, whether that be the classroom, the library, the Titan Learning Center, an office, or the custodial/maintenance department. Students' lives at GBS go beyond the classroom so I made an effort to be at performances, games, club meetings and other extracurricular events. I've been able to see GBS in action - up close. These visits solidified in my mind why GBS is such a special place.
What is your favorite memory from your first year as principal? My favorite memories include the ways students welcomed me into the Titan family. There wasn't one day or one week - it was all year. The students energize me every single day, and I look forward to creating memories with them for years to come.
How would you characterize your first year as principal? Energizing and exhausting - all at the same time! It takes time to get to know so many students, staff, parents, and community members, and it is time well spent.
What Titan tradition did you embrace most? The annual Variety Show is a long-standing Titan tradition I was able to be a part of this year. I was so impressed by the level of talent among GBS students and the level of expertise of GBS production staff. And dancing in the show was a thrill.
What is your favorite thing you learned? My favorite thing I learned is how much GBS values inclusion. This core value for GBS perfectly aligns with my own commitment to equity and inclusion. The culture and climate at GBS make it safe for everyone to be their own true selves. The diverse student population is a gift to GBS, and we will continue to strive towards ensuring every student and adult feels safe and comfortable at GBS.
What is something you hoped our community learned about you this year? I hope the Glenview community learned that I am devoted to GBS and excited to continue my journey as a Titan!
Nine months later: what does it mean to be GBS principal? I still feel honored and privileged to serve as GBS principal. I don't think that feeling will ever go away. I feel like the sky's the limit with what we can accomplish together.

Glenbrook musical takes the stage, inspired by
Broadway performer
"Thank you for doing this show," Broadway star Heather Headley said to the combined cast of the 2016 Glenbrook musical. "It is dear to my heart."
Sixteen years ago, the curtain rose on Broadway, premiering Disney's new musical Aida, written by Elton John and Tim Rice. For more than 1800 shows, Headley stepped into the title role, cementing the character and earning a Tony Award for Best Actress for her adaptation.
This spring, the curtain will rise on the Glenbrook stage and students from Glenbrook North and South will take on the tale of Aida - transporting audiences in the luxurious, lavish and perilous world of ancient Egypt.
In order to tell the mesmerizing story of two star-crossed lovers - an Egyptian prince and a Nubian princess - who must choose between following their hearts and leading their people, the cast spent a once-in-a-lifetime afternoon with Headley.
Performances for the 2016 Glenbrook Musical, Aida, will be held at GBN from April 27 through 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sheely Center for Performing Arts. For tickets, visit ShowTix4u.com.
