Business mentors wanted for inaugural Glenbrook Entrepreneurship Business Incubator course
Building a business will become a community effort next fall in the Glenbrooks.
In the robust Entrepreneurship Business Incubator course, launching at both GBN and GBS for the 2016-17 school year, sophomores, juniors and seniors will be introduced to an authentic world of entrepreneurship through real-life lessons from real-life professionals. Currently, GBN and GBS business departments are recruiting community members, parents, business partners and alumni who can lend their expertise.
"What will make this program unique is the relationship-building between students and professionals with experience in the business world," said Dawn Hall, GBS Instructional Supervisor for Career and Technical Education. "The wisdom and feedback our partners provide will be integral to the educational and creative process."
The programs, known as Spartan Startup and Titan Startup, respectively, will have students learn about business first-hand as they build a product or service throughout the school year and finish with a "Pitch Night" to a panel of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists at the end of the course.
Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors who connect with the business teams weekly, coaches who deliver strategic short lessons in the classroom, advisory board panelists who offer advice and evaluate the companies twice a year, and donors who contribute to seed funds. All aspects of running a business will need to be covered, from accounting, marketing and human resources to finance and legal, said Hall.

The Glenbrooks will host an Open House on Monday, April 18, at 7 p.m at the District Office, for professionals interested in volunteering for the Spartan Startup or Titan Startup programs. The Open House will include a brief presentation, overview of the program and introductions to teachers and program leaders. To reserve a spot, RSVP to startup@glenbrook225.org by April 13.
"We know our Glenbrook community is filled with entrepreneurs, executives and business professionals who can enrich this learning environment," said Mary Kosirog, GBN Instructional Supervisor for Career and Life skills.

Glenbrook musical presents, Aida
Wednesday, April 27 through Saturday, April 30, 7:30 p.m., GBN CPA
This spring, the Glenbrooks will sail through time as students from GBS and GBN dance and sing in an ancient Egyptian setting in the Broadway musical adaption of Aida. Based on the classic 19th-century opera of the same name, Aida tells the story of an Egyptian prince who falls in love with a Nubian princess. Against all odds, the couple strives to find a way to be together, even in the face of doom.
With music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, the "pop-opera" features songs sung in a pop style of music. Members of the cast received a special master class with original Broadway Aida star, Heather Headley, in March. Headley, who earned a Tony Award for Best Actresses for her pioneering of the title character, workshopped with the cast, critiqued performances, offered vocal tips and demonstrated singing techniques.
Performances of the Glenbrook musical will be held at GBN from April 27 through 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sheely Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $13 and can be purchased at Showtix4u.com.

GBS named number one: Niche placed South as top school in nation for extracurricular activities
Karina Benson, Yoon Kim, and Chaerim Park
Niche, an organization that reviews K-12 public schools, recently ranked GBS number one of all public high schools in the nation when it comes to extracurricular activities, which includes clubs, organizations and athletic teams.
Niche.com publishes results for a variety of rankings of schools periodically throughout the year. Information is gathered to determine rankings by compiling data, which is collected and monitored by the U.S. Department of Education.
According to Jessica Hair, Niche's marketing outreach coordinator, the data for ranking the best extracurricular activities come from reviews from students and parents in addition to school reports about items such as expenses per student, the number of sports and the percentage of female and male athletes.
"Right now [GBS has] the best extracurriculars in the nation; however, [GBS] also stands out across the board," Hair said. "[GBS is] the number six [all-around] public school in Illinois, [and GBS is] the number 32 public school in America."
