Broadway star to offer Master Class with Glenbrook Musical
Once auditions for the Glenbrook musical are underway, March 1 through 4, Spartan and Titan singers and dancers will be thrust into the ancient love story of a Nubian princess and an Egyptian prince.

This year, they'll have one of the world's top vocal powerhouses lending her wisdom to help them navigate the tale of Aida.

On Monday, March 21, Heather Headley, star of Elton John and Tim Rice's Broadway adaptation of Aida, will offer a unique Master Class opportunity for Glenbrook students. Her presentation for the entire cast will include attending rehearsal, critiquing performances and demonstrating vocal techniques.

"It is a first for us to have someone with this caliber of a background share insights and perform with our actors and actresses," said Chad Davidson, music director.

After touring with Ragtime and originating the role of Nala in Broadway's The Lion King, Headley starred as the titular role in Aida, earning a Tony Award for Best Actress for her pioneering of the character.

One of the benefits of having Headley lead the Master Class, Davidson said, is her ability to offer hands-on, personal tips for developing the musical characters and sharing the emotions and intentions behind the roles.

"Often directors are left to interpret the script and music as they read it on the page. We're fortunate to get to interact with someone who can speak directly to what was intended and tried on Broadway. We are so thrilled to offer this opportunity to our students," he said. "She's stunning, has a generous spirit and is unbelievably talented - an amazing person for our students to learn from."

The collaboration was initiated by Headley's genuine passion for supporting musical theater in education, said Davidson. Headley, who was born in Trinidad and attended Northwestern University, has performed on stages across New York City and London and currently lives in Hinsdale. Her musical career earned her several Grammy Award nominations and wins for Best R&B Gospel Performance and Best Musical Show Album.

"Being exposed to the highest level of talent offers a tremendous learning opportunity," Davidson said. "This Master Class is sure to elevate the quality of our show."

Performances for the 2016 Glenbrook Musical, Aida, will be held at GBN from April 27 through 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sheely Center for Performing Arts.

The Glenbrook Academy senior students, who study French, and the Glenbrook Academy junior students, who study German, collaborated to reenact the Christmas Truce between the French and Germans during World War I. This unofficial but widespread truce between the countries during Christmas 1914 had soldiers from both sides mingling and exchanging gifts and souvenirs. In their performance, the junior class spoke the whole time in German, while the senior class communicated in French.

The reenactment was a culmination of a weeklong partnership between the World Languages, Social Studies and English departments to help bring the study of the World War to life.

South plans to replace desks in classrooms, test effect on learning environment
Mary Grace Reynolds, staff reporter
GBS and GBN students will be running a trial of new desks from Feb. 21 to March 19 in preparation for their eventual placement in classrooms.

According to Michael Field, director of educational technology, during this trial period, various types of desks and tables will be evaluated by students. The feedback the students give will then determine which types of desks are purchased and put in the new classrooms.

"If we're going to grow and progress the learning environment within our school and district we want to make sure that we have furniture that's going to allow it," Field said.

According to South Principal Lauren Fagel, the furniture that was selected to be in the trial was chosen to fit into the District's' 3-year technology vision. The technology vision is meant to make classrooms as engaging and advantageous as possible for students and teachers.
