Board recognizes GBN physics teacher Nate Unterman

At the meeting on October 26, Glenbrook North physics teacher Nate Unterman was recognized for his service helping students test new theories and run experiments.

Over the summer, Mr. Unterman coordinated the first-ever partnership for high school students with Fermilab. Under his guidance, twelve GBN students worked alongside Nobel Prize-winning physicists and used Fermilab's facility and resources to run their own experiment for two weeks. Recently, Mr. Unterman has been collaborating with higher education facilities to have the results analyzed.

During his thirty year career at GBN, Mr. Unterman has amassed notable achievements, including overseeing and advising student proposal for international competitions, developing and designing the Physics First curriculum model and Material Sciences capstone course, creating the Research Review Board to review and maintain safety for research being done in the Glenbrook community, authoring several textbooks and earning 12 nominations for Distinguished Teacher.

Mr. Unterman will retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year.

Board considers construction projects for summer 2016
The Board discussed several proposed facilities projects for the summer of 2016. This is an annual process where recommendations are presented in the fall, bids prepared in the winter and approved in the spring, with construction taking place over the summer months.

"Last year, the facilities committee outlined a five-year financial plan to maintain and update the district's buildings and grounds," said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle. "Given the district's financial stability, it is a prudent practice to establish a reasonable budget to proactively protect our community's assets."

The proposal for construction includes the following projects for an estimated total cost of $4.5 million: Roofing (GBS); paving (GBN/GBS); Project Lead the Way classroom (GBN); Locker room modifications (GBN); Physic Lab (GBS); Project Lead the Way classroom (GBS); Tech office/computer lab classroom conversion (GBS); Library furniture (GBS); and Locker room modifications (GBS).

The Board is expected to vote on the facility plan later this fall.

New emergency closing information released
Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle released new guidelines that will better allow Glenbrook families to anticipate the District's decision to close school due to cold or wind-chill conditions. The document is available on the District's  Emergency website.
