College Report - 2015
Glenbrook North reported that 98 percent of the graduating class of 2015 is pursuing higher education this fall at 145 institutions.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Oakton Community College remain the most popular college choices selected by the former Glenbrook North students, followed closely by Indiana University, University of Iowa and, new this year, University of Missouri.
Some of the other top attended universities or colleges include Illinois State University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Michigan, DePaul and Miami of Ohio. Students applied to an average of about five institutions.
Of the 98 percent of students attending college, 71 percent remain in the Midwest, 34 percent of which are in Illinois. Three graduates are attending institutions outside the U.S. Overall, 66 percent of students are attending public schools, and 34 percent are attending private schools.
Additionally, three graduates have secured jobs, one has entered the military and six have elected to defer college to travel, play a sport, take a gap year or serve overseas.

Storytelling takes the spotlight in fall play,
"Arabian Nights"
Thursday, October 1 through Saturday, October 3, 7:30 p.m., CPA
The stage opens on the wedding night in the palace of King Shahrayar. By morning, the new Queen Shahrazad is to be put to death like all the young brides before her. But she has one gift that could save her - the gift of storytelling.
For the fall play, 20 GBN drama students will bring alive adventures in magical worlds populated by talking birds, genies and crafty thieves as the courageous heroine spins her tales. Tickets are $8 or free with a student activity pass. For more information, visit GBN Theatre website.

 Glenbrooks and Family Action Network sponsor talk on parenting Wednesday, October 14, 7 p.m., GBS Auditorium
Sponsored by the Family Action Network (FAN) in partnership with Glenbrook North and South, Julie Lythcott-Haims will offer a special presentation on parenting techniques for local Glenview and Northbrook parents.
The former Stanford University Associate Vice-Provost and Dean of Freshman Undergraduate Advising will discuss her recent book, "How To Raise an Adult," and address how to break free of the over-parenting trap and prepare children for success.
The event will is free and open to the public.

Clubs to host Community Halloween Party
Friday, October 30, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Planned by GBN students, hundreds of community children from preschool to 5th grade are invited to attend this annual Halloween Party, which has become a popular Halloween tradition in Northbrook. Various clubs and groups plan games/activities, decorate rooms and offer treats and prizes. An adult must accompany all children.

Online registration opens for
Operation Snowball
For the first time, Operation Snowball, GBN's three-day leadership retreat, will offer online registration for its event November 18-20 in Burlington, Wisconsin.
The fourth annual Operation Snowball, themed "A New Tomorrow," will offer special workshops, skits and speakers designed to foster an environment of making connections, furthering leadership skills and having fun in a safe way. Hundreds of Spartans leave feeling connected and refreshed each year. Registration is first-come, first-served.

Chime in on curriculum and student wellness
In the coming months, Glenbrook High School District 225 will embark on a strategic planning process, focused specifically on the areas of curriculum and student wellness.
GBN believes in the importance of community input when it comes to developing initiatives and is kicking things off by conducting a community-wide survey to help identify important items for action/discussion over the next three years.

REVISED: Twelve students named National Merit Semifinalists
Twelve students from Glenbrook North have been named National Merit Semifinalists and fourteen students from Glenbrook North have been named commended students in the National Merit Program. They join the nationwide pool of students who represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and include the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
The twelve National Merit semifinalists include: Kasey Bersh, Emily Chen, Conor Fitzpatrick, Paul Graham, Sean Kelly, Jeana Kim, Leopold Mayer, Jacob Rose, John Spector-Bishop, Anthony Trufanov, Michael Zhang and Bryant Zhao. Fourteen commended students include: Zachary Bernstein, Shannon Buttimer, Graham Cohen, Jacob Feiger, Jacob Gordon, Robert Grosulescu, Suyeon Hong, Richard Kilpatrick, Daphne Kramer, Shayna Lutz, Michael McFarland, Amber Olson, Catherine Seno and Victoria Tu. About 1.5 million juniors entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. NOTE: GBN regrets the error included in the initial Connections.

Glenbrooks name two new technology directors
On Wednesday, July 1, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education approved the appointments of Mr. Michael Field as the Director of Educational Technology and Dr. Raoul ("R.J.") Gravel as the Director of Technical Services. While a summer transitional period is expected, both hirings are effective immediately.

Board approves final budget for 2015-16
At a meeting on September 28, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education approved the final 2015-16 budget. The 2015-16 budget projects $115,332,518 in revenues and $118,544,483 in expenditures in the Operating Fund. This is the first time in recent years that the district has put forth a deficit budget of $3.2 million in order to address capital improvements and debt certificate payments. However, this represents a balanced budget for educational operations for programs and services.
