College Report - 2015
Glenbrook South's graduating class of 2015 reported a record-setting 98 percent of graduates pursuing higher education this fall at 162 different campuses.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Oakton Community College remain the top college choices selected by Glenbrook South students, followed, again, closely by DePaul University.
Some of the other top selected colleges or universities include Indiana, Illinois State, University of Illinois at Chicago, Marquette, Northwestern, University of Iowa, Iowa State, Loyola, Miami of Ohio and new popular choices University of Dayton and Columbia College. Each graduate applied to an average of five institutions.
Of the 98 percent of 2015 graduates attending college, 78 percent are staying in the Midwest - 52 percent of them in Illinois. Eight graduates are attending institutions overseas in Netherlands, Canada, Ireland, Philippines, Scotland and South Korea.
Nine GBS graduates were accepted into Ivy League schools and 27 reported they are participating in college athletics, with 10 of them recruited to play a Division I sport.
Additionally, two graduates are taking a gap year, two have entered the military, two have enrolled in career/technical education, and six have secured jobs.

Homecoming 2015: Going for Gold
Glenbrook South is headed to the Olympics. See you at the Games!
Homecoming week runs from Tuesday, October 13, through Saturday, October 17. Monday officially kicks off the week with float building in the Autos Courtyard from 3:15 to 9 p.m. Construction will continue throughout the week up to Friday at 11 p.m.
Friday night football returns again for this year's Homecoming. The tailgate party in the Courtyard will be from 3:30-5:30 p.m., and the Pep Rally will be in the main gym at 5:30 p.m. Students will then join alumni, staff, faculty, parents, friends and everyone else in the Titan family as GBS takes on the New Trier High School Trevians in the stadium at 7 p.m. Afterwards, fireworks at 9:30 p.m. will lead to the street dance in the Autos Courtyard from 9:45-11 p.m. Wristbands for the evening's activities will be sold throughout the week for $5 or available for $6 at the door.
The Homecoming parade kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Once again, GBS will be marching from St. David's on Glenview and Shermer to Jackson Park on Washington.
The Homecoming dance on Saturday, themed "South Olympics," runs from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Main Gym. Dress is semi-formal (no jeans). Those not appropriately dressed will be turned away. Bid price per couple is $15 with activity pass; $18 without activity pass; $20 at the door. Single tickets are $7.50 with activity pass; $9 without activity pass; $10 at the door.

Oakton Community College will present "Examining the College Experience." Learn firsthand how to get a head start on what to consider when choosing a college. All juniors and their parents are invited to attend.

Special Q&A and signing for alum's new book

GBS alum Michael Witwer, class of 2001, will be coming home to Glenview to sell, sign, answer questions and discuss his new book, "Empire of Imagination: Gary Gygax and the Birth of Dungeons & Dragons" with local families and community members.
Published by Bloomsbury, the UK distributor of "Harry Potter," the book offers a first-time biography of Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D and the man who inspired much of the fantasy and roleplaying games and culture seen today. Witwer will be on a nationwide tour after "Empire of Imagination's" release to the public on October 6.

Glenbrooks and Family Action Network sponsor talk on student success 
Wednesday, October 14, 7 p.m., GBN's Center for Performing Arts
Sponsored by the Family Action Network (FAN) in partnership with Glenbrook North and South, Julie Lythcott-Haims will offer a special presentation to local Glenview and Northbrook parents and young men and women of all ages.
The former Stanford University Associate Vice-Provost and Dean of Freshman Undergraduate Advising will discuss her recent book, "How To Raise an Adult," and address how to break free of the over-parenting trap and prepare children for success.
The event will is free and open to the public.

Fall play bewitches audience with "The Crucible"
Thursday, October 22, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, October 23, 4 and 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, October 24, 7:30 p.m. in the Watson Auditorium
More than 20 Titan drama students will take on the true-life story of the Salem witch trials, from 1692-93, as imagined in the famous play, "The Crucible." GBS is one of many theaters around the country celebrating the 100-year anniversary of playwright Arthur Miller's birth by performing this Tony award-winning play.

Seven students named National Merit Semifinalists
Seven students from Glenbrook South have been named National Merit Semifinalists. They join the nationwide pool of semifinalists that represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and include the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
These students include: William Aki, Michael Callahan, Dean Gladish, Kevin Gordon, William Huie, Samantha Levi and Douglas Stryker. About 1.5 million juniors entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Deadline for submitting senior messages - 10/9
Senior parents wishing to congratulate their sons or daughters in the 2016 Etruscan yearbook must submit their senior message or patron order forms by Friday, October 9.

Chime in on curriculum and student wellness
 In the coming months, Glenbrook High School District 225 will embark on a strategic planning process, focused specifically on the areas of curriculum and student wellness. GBS believes in the importance of community input when it comes to developing initiatives and is kicking things off by conducting a community-wide survey to help identify important items for action/discussion over the next three years.

Glenbrooks name two new technology directors
On Wednesday, July 1, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education approved the appointments of Mr. Michael Field as the Director of Educational Technology and Dr. Raoul ("R.J.") Gravel as the Director of Technical Services. While a summer transitional period is expected, both hirings are effective immediately.

Board approves final budget for 2015-16
At a meeting on September 28, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education approved the final 2015-16 budget. The 2015-16 budget projects $115,332,518 in revenues and $118,544,483 in expenditures in the Operating Fund. This is the first time in recent years that the district has put forth a deficit budget of $3.2 million in order to address capital improvements and debt certificate payments. However, this represents a balanced budget for educational operations for programs and services.

2015 Homecoming information
To help kick off Homecoming, the GBS Parents' Association is again sponsoring the Titan Tailgate on Friday, October 16, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. During the week, students can purchase $5.00 wristbands in the cafeteria that cover the Titan Tailgate meal of grilled burgers, hotdogs or grilled cheese and admission to all Friday events. Wristbands are $6.00 at the door.
