Board reviews research on homework practices
As part of the district initiatives for the 2014-15 school year, administrators reviewed secondary research findings of homework practices. Given the recent changes to the school day structure at GBS, and the fact that this was the first year of full integration of the one-to-one initiative, the study didn't seek to collect data on the specific homework habits of Glenbrook students. However, the district is planning to conduct student focus groups and surveys during the 2015-16 school year.
"We discovered many competing findings when it comes to homework, and parents in general, hold polarizing viewpoints when it comes to its value, frequency, and time," said Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services Dr. Rosanne Williamson.
That said, the study did find some common characteristics that define quality homework, such as having a clear academic purpose, instilling competence, providing opportunities for student ownership, and engagement.
In addition to conducting research specific to Glenbrook homework practices during the next school year, the district also plans to develop a homework policy, determine related professional development needs and identify mechanisms to improve communications between parents, students and staff.
GBN and GBS review student participation in athletics and activities
As part of an ongoing effort to provide ample opportunities for student participation in athletics and activities at our schools, teams from GBN and GBS met this spring to review participation numbers.
In general, even as the student population at GBS grows, opportunities remain fairly consistent with GBN due to enrollment-driven budget allocations. However, because of a larger student enrollment, GBS students may experience challenges in highly competitive situations such as some athletic teams or audition-based performances.
Both schools offer a great diversity of extracurricular opportunities, with building-based flexibility to address student interests as they arise. Both schools also cite similar challenges to any increase in student participation including performance, practice and competition facilities scheduled to their maximum utilization capacities. They also recommended additional coaches for non-cut sports which would also provide support for increased student participation.
Community newsletters mailed to every district household In the coming weeks, every resident and business within the district boundaries will receive a printed copy of the spring community newsletter, The Glenbrooks. This publication is mailed twice a year to ensure all taxpayers have access to information about their public high schools.
