GBS says farewell to Principal Wegley with special Q&A
In 1995, math and science teacher Dr. Brian Wegley first joined Glenbrook South and, amazed by the vast resources and rich culture, said he "finally saw what education was supposed to be." For 17 of the past 20 years, Wegley has called GBS home, serving the school as a teacher, coach, associate principal of curriculum and instruction and, for ten years, principal.
During his time as a Titan, Dr. Wegley spearheaded the 50th anniversary celebration of the school, worked with administration to pass a 2006 Referendum that updated the facilities and improved academic programs, oversaw a shift to the Block Schedule and had the pleasure of graduating his daughter, Corine (class of 2008), his son, Rob (class of 2011), and 9,602 additional students from Glenbrook South.
"There have been 30,000 graduates from GBS through our 53-year history. I am honored to have been able to serve more than 30 percent of our students to date and I have cared for every one of them as I would my own," Wegley said. "I believe in GBS and am so thankful that my children are also graduates of this wonderful school."
In July, the current GBS principal will leave Glenbrook South to become superintendent of District 30. Before his departure, Wegley took some time to reflect on his favorite memories at GBS and his vision for what's ahead.
Q: What did being Principal (in general and of GBS) mean to you?
Glenbrook South is an amazing school by any measure. We have incredible students, amazing community support and a talented staff. GBS has also had amazing principals. As the fourth principal in our 53-year history, I have felt a deep responsibility to maintain our culture and serve every component of our school community.
The past ten years have been wonderful. I have felt trust from our parents, support from my leadership team, care from our students and investment from our staff. I have loved being the principal of GBS! Glenbrook South is a special place and we refer to ourselves as a family. I have given my heart to our students, staff and community and have truly loved all I have served.
Q: What are you most proud of at GBS?
I am most proud of the fact that as good as GBS was ten years ago, we are an even better school today. We embrace the fact that maintaining excellence requires continuous improvement. What differentiates GBS is our civility, involvement and high expectations. I am proud to have lived these and to have put together an amazing team who helped deepen these attributes across time.
Note: Members of the community are encouraged to attend a farewell reception for Dr. Wegley on Tuesday, May 26 from 6-7:15 p.m. in the Student Activities Center.
