"How to Succeed in Business"  opens on the Glenbrook stage

"Dear reader, this book is designed to tell you everything you need to know about the science of getting ahead," begins the narrator of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

And as audience members settle into their seats to watch GBN and GBS students don their best suits for the Tony-award-winning musical, a familiar voice will continue, "Now let us assume you are young, healthy, clear-eyed, eager and anxious to rise quickly and easily to the top of the business world. You can!"

The voice will be recognizable as that of Rob Martier, the radio journalist who has been on WGN 720 AM since 2011.

Previously voiced on Broadway by Anderson Cooper and Walter Cronkite, the role as narrator will have Martier intersecting tips into the musical to help the main character, J. Pierrepont Finch, rise from window washer to chairman of the board of the World Wide Wicket Company.

GBS theatre director John Knight said the classical show, which won seven Tony Awards and is the only musical to have won a Pulitzer Prize, is a great fit for Martier. Martier, a Glenbrook South 1989 graduate, boasts a storied career in radio, beginning in Montreal before progressing to Chicago.

"This is a 'must-do' for any theatre performer; I remember being in the show decades ago," Knight said.

Knight said the play and lines from the book address themes that are still relevant in the workplace, including sexism and gender roles.

"We have the talent pool of students to be successful with this show and the audience will have fun with the gentle humor and satire the play uses to represent corporate culture," he said.

Additional staff include: Marty Sirvatka, music director; Bonnie Lasky, choreographer; Rich Winship, technical director; Aaron Kaplan, conductor; Barb and Lori Blohm, costumers; Sheryl Morton, props and set decoration; and Jim Shellard, producer.

Performances will be held at GBS from April 29 to May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watson Auditorium. Tickets are $13. For ticket information, please call 1-866-967-8167 or visit Showtix4u.com

Senior Yasmin Chavez faces cancer, continues to fight
Calli Haramaras, co-features editor

Senior Yasmin Chavez saw soccer as her passion - she has been playing for the past 10 years of her life, and is currently committed to play at North Central College next year. However, her future as a player was put in jeopardy when she was diagnosed with cancer in December of 2014.

The symptoms first started appearing this past fall when Chavez was playing club soccer and inexplicably felt light headed, a tightness in her chest and bulging veins in her neck. After persistent symptoms, Chavez was admitted to Lurie's Children's Hospital in Chicago around 12 a.m. on December 18, 2014. What Yasmin and her mother, Yuridia, originally dismissed as allergies or the start of pneumonia turned out to be a nine by four centimeter tumor in Yasmin's chest, ultimately causing a blood clot in one of the largest arteries in her heart.
