"How to Succeed in Business"
opens on the Glenbrook stage
"Dear reader, this book is designed to tell you everything you need to know about the science of getting ahead," begins the narrator of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

And as audience members settle into their seats to watch GBN and GBS students don their best suits for the Tony-award-winning musical, a familiar voice will continue, "Now let us assume you are young, healthy, clear-eyed, eager and anxious to rise quickly and easily to the top of the business world. You can!"

The voice will be recognizable as that of Rob Martier, the radio journalist who has been on WGN 720 AM since 2011.

Previously voiced on Broadway by Anderson Cooper and Walter Cronkite, the role as narrator will have Martier intersecting tips into the musical to help the main character, J. Pierrepont Finch, rise from window washer to chairman of the board of the World Wide Wicket Company.

GBS theatre director John Knight said the classical show, which won seven Tony Awards and is the only musical to have won a Pulitzer Prize, is a great fit for Martier. Martier, a Glenbrook graduate, boasts a storied career in radio, beginning in Montreal before progressing to Chicago.

"This is a 'must-do' for any theatre performer; I remember being in the show decades ago," Knight said.

Knight said the play and lines from the book address themes that are still relevant in the workplace, including sexism and gender roles.

"We have the talent pool of students to be successful with this show and the audience will have fun with the gentle humor and satire the play uses to represent corporate culture," he said.

Performances will be held at GBS from April 29 to May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watson Auditorium. Tickets are $13. For ticket information, please call 1-866-967-8167 or visit Showtix4u.com

Students earn opportunity to play with famous conductor

Lauren Sulkowski, Executive Lifestyle Editor

On a cold Sunday afternoon in December, Glenbrook South senior Marissa Takaki strolled into a large room overlooking Lake Michigan with her bassoon in hand. Everywhere she looked students were nervously playing their instruments in preparation for their upcoming auditions.

After minutes of waiting, Takaki was called for her audition. When she walked into the audition room, two cameramen awaited her, but Takaki said she was not nervous.

After preparing for weeks for this opportunity, three students from the Glenbrook Symphony Orchestra traveled to downtown Chicago to audition for a spot in the Chicago Youth in Music Festival Orchestra. In addition to Takaki, two Glenbrook North students, senior Ki-Deok Park and junior Alec Mawrence, also auditioned and were selected to participate in the Chicago Youth in Music Festival Orchestra. For this program, the selected students participated in three rehearsals. The program culminated with a rehearsal with Riccardo Muti, Chicago Symphony Orchestra director.
