Spartans connect on a day dedicated to passions
During one fantastic day in March, GBN students will fold into downward dog, swirl frosting onto cupcakes, knit a scarf on their arms, play into improvisation scenarios, sign the alphabet in sign language, run a golf course, develop a fictional character, and dunk on the basketball court.
And those are just the 9:50 a.m. sessions.
On Thursday, March 19, Glenbrook North will celebrate its third Spartans Connect All School Workshop, an event held every two years, celebrating the interests, hobbies and passions of the GBN community.
The unique day of workshops, panels and activities changes the design of an everyday school day, putting students, administrators and community members at the helm of the classroom to offer opportunities to connect through shared and diverse experiences.
GBN Special Education teacher Bill Edison, who helped organize the event, said by creating sparks, igniting passions and making connections, the GBN community can grow stronger.
"Spartans Connect benefits both our students and staff by giving them opportunities to share and participate in each others' passions," Edison said. "Along the way, we hope everyone will discover new interests of their own and develop a broader appreciation for the diversity of ideas and experiences here in the GBN community."
The 2015 Spartans Connect should have a little bit of something for everyone - from movies, music, and travel to careers, games, and hobbies, to food, sports and fitness. Some particularly popular events include Principal Paul Pryma's virtual tour of Chicago's best "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives," and Associate Principal Kris Frandson's Taste of New Orleans session.
In addition, Spartans Connect recruited about a dozen outside presenters, including local professionals and staff spouses from Second City, A Capella groups, Shred415 and more, to help GBN students and staff experience something different from their usual day-to-day.
"The talents and experiences these presenters are able to share add a whole new dimension to the day, providing the GBN community with a chance to learn from individuals with whom they wouldn't normally cross paths. We're excited to have them all on board," Edison said.
Students are able to register for their preferred classes through early March and will participate in up to six sessions throughout the day, including lunch and an introduction. Members of the community will be able to follow along on social media using promoted hashtags.
Spartans Connect will run from 9:40 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. on Thursday, March 19.

Fermata scores spot on Monday Night Football
Lauren Sulkowski, Executive Lifestyle Editor
"Own the cheese."
These were the words that director of choirs Andrew Wallace told Fermata Nowhere as it was preparing to film a parody for the Monday Night Football pre-game show, which aired on Dec. 15.
"I think that the girls at first thought it was really cheesy and hokey, and I totally agree with them," said Wallace. "But one thing I had to explain to the girls was that it's supposed to be funny, and you just need to go with it. ...It's a parody, it's supposed to be fun."
According to Larry Snyder, executive sports producer for ABC, the pre-game show was viewed in four to five million locations in the Midwest. Snyder, who has a daughter in Fermata, set up this opportunity.
