GBS Connects Day introduces students to variety of
career choices
Since graduating from GBS in 1989, Scott Rose has become a computer programmer, entrepreneur, salesman, motivational speaker, writer and comedian. The current owner of ScottWorld has created computer programs for more than 200 businesses, written for Mac|Life Magazine and traveled for six years with Apple.
On Thursday, March 19, he'll inspire the students of Glenbrook South with the myriad of careers available to them as he serves as the keynote speaker during the second GBS Connects Day biennial event.
And what could Titans be when they grow up?
Landscape Designers, Sports Managers, Police Officers, Directors of Communication, Clinical Psychologists, Operations Directors, Corporate Lawyers, Civil Engineers, Project Managers, Directors of Aviation, Photographers, Plumbers, Art Therapists, Interior Designers, Human Resource Managers, Physicians or Physical Therapists.
And that's just at 10 a.m.
With an aim on connecting classroom learning with life beyond high school, GBS Connects offers students an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of career opportunities by hearing from professionals in the field.
The real-life testimonials will help students gain access to more information than they usually would, said GBS College Counselor Ann LePage, who helped put together the event. The event provides unique insight into career daily routines, paths to preparation, and pros and cons.
"In college counseling, we want students to consider 'why' they are going to college as much as 'where.' The opportunity for students to connect with career professionals twice during their high school career gives them great insight into possible areas of study or career paths for their future," LePage said. "Our faculty also learn real life examples to relate to the content and curriculum they are covering in their classes."
GBS partnered with more than a hundred professionals from around the community to bring students access to a variety of careers. Students are able to register for their preferred classes through early March and will attend four 45-minute sessions on careers of their choice.
GBS Connects will run from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 19.
