Student wins first place in national math contest

In a game-show-style competition unlike any other, it all came down to a binomial theorem.

The math question asked, "What is the earliest appearing five-digit number in Pascal's triangle?" And Sam Korsky had the answer.

The Glenbrook North senior was first to hit the buzzer and share the answer of 11,440, sealing his win of $10,000 and first place in the American Mathematical Society's Who Wants to Be a Mathematician contest.

After a rigorous qualification process throughout the fall, Korsky joined ten of the top math students in the country on Monday, January 13 in San Antonio, Texas for the sixth annual national competition.

The 11 semifinalists were selected from more than 1,500 students nationwide based on their scores on a qualifying online test that quizzed players in areas of pre-calculus mathematics, including algebra, trigonometry, geometry, history of mathematics, combinatorics, probability, and logic.

"These kinds of events are difficult to train for, given that they're more about speed than learning how to solve problems," said Korsky, who practiced by playing For The Win, a speed-based one-on-one practice test, with a teammate a few nights before the competition.

Throughout the national competition, Korsky used his reasoning skills to head off the competition. Between questions, he said he worked to strategize how fast to ring the buzzer and how much work to double check.

Grad Night is being planned for the Glenbrook North High School Class of 2015.  The primary purpose of Grad Night is to keep graduating seniors in a safe, drug and alcohol-free environment.  It is also a party for the graduating seniors to celebrate the culmination of their years of hard work.  This will be GBN's 26th annual Grad Night.  More than 95 percent of graduates participated in this event last year.

The Grad Night Steering Committee is seeking individuals and businesses that can donate prizes, food, or funds for the event. Volunteers are needed to work the evening of Grad Night, especially the second shift and for clean-up the following morning.

This year's Grad Night is scheduled for Sunday, June 7, with check-in by 11 p.m. and check-out at 5 a.m. on Monday, June 8.

District 225 begins search for Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South principals

The 2015-16 school year will bring new leaders to both Glenbrook schools, as District 225 seeks candidates for the principal positions at GBN and GBS.

The GBS vacancy is a result of current principal Dr. Brian Wegley's acceptance of the superintendent position with Northbrook/Glenview District 30.

"It's a unique challenge for our district as we seek to hire two principals during the same period of time," said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle, referring the fact that in addition to the vacancy at GBS, Dr. Paul Pryma, GBN principal, will be retiring at the end of this school year. "We congratulate Dr. Wegley on his new position and wish him the very best in his new endeavor," Riggle continued. "It is comforting to know that he will remain in our school community actively working to prepare students who will enter both GBS and GBN in the future."

Since learning of Dr. Wegley's departure just prior to winter break, the Glenbrooks have readjusted the search process so that both timelines align. The district plans to conduct interviews in early February, with the goal of presenting the two finalists to the Board of Education by the end of that same month.

Each month, this section features a piece of student-created work. This month's article is from a December edition of Glenbrook North's student-run newspaper, Torch. A new edition of the Torch is distributed approximately every month and can be found in newsstands throughout the school or on their website.

Basketball players 'Cure it on the Court'

Hana Bezark and Victoria Tu, Executive Copy Editor and Features Editor

When Athletic Director John Catalano received a call from alumnus Zachary Bulwa ('07) a couple years ago, Bulwa asked how he could incorporate more high school students into his Cure it on the Court Foundation, a nonprofit organization designed to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

The idea for his foundation originated when Bulwa began shadowing pediatric oncologists at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.

"Back when I was in high school, I knew I wanted to be a doctor but I couldn't really contribute the way [the doctors] could," said Bulwa, founder of the Cure it on the Court Foundation. "So I thought if I raised money to support pediatric cancer research [at] the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, it would be my way of helping these kids."
