Titan Poms honored with American School Spirit Award
The Titan Poms can be found at the sidelines of Varsity Titan football and basketball games, raising spirit and entertaining the crowd. They're found in the community consistently helping those in need and they're found walking the hallways of Glenbrook South, encouraging their peers to find ways to give back.
This spring, they will be watched by millions of viewers on ESPN, being honored for their dedication to service and spirit. For the first time, the Universal Dance Association has named the team this year's coveted American School Spirit Award winner.
Poms Coach Julie Smith said the team is honored to receive the award, which is given to the top all-around program in the country. She said her 2014-15 team embodies all the qualities the award honors: a team that excels in athletic ability and scholarship, builds spirit in the school and seeks to give back to the community.
"This award symbolizes all I hope for in my program, that we are helping teach young women how to be well-rounded, responsible citizens," said Smith. "The team's dance talent is just one piece of what makes the group special. The girls on this team are incredibly kind and funny, but they also work hard everyday to excel."

Drivers Ed program receives IDOT grant
Glenbrook South teens continue to help make the roads in Illinois a safer place to drive.
As one of 10 high schools selected from across the state to receive the Illinois Department of Transportation's (IDOT) Operation Teen Safe Driving grant, GBS has worked hard this winter to make sure Glenview teens are aware of safe driving techniques.
Throughout November and December, students in the GBS drivers education program used the $2000 grant to host a peer-led campaign for seat belt wearing and not driving distracted, under the influence or drowsy.

District 225 begins search for Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South principals
The 2015-16 school year will bring new leaders to both Glenbrook schools, as District 225 seeks candidates for the principal positions at GBN and GBS.
The GBS vacancy is a result of current principal Dr. Brian Wegley's acceptance of the superintendent position with Northbrook/Glenview District 30.
"It's a unique challenge for our district as we seek to hire two principals during the same period of time," said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle, referring the fact that in addition to the vacancy at GBS, Dr. Paul Pryma, GBN principal, will be retiring at the end of this school year. "We congratulate Dr. Wegley on his new position and wish him the very best in his new endeavor," Riggle continued. "It is comforting to know that he will remain in our school community actively working to prepare students who will enter both GBS and GBN in the future."
Since learning of Dr. Wegley's departure just prior to winter break, the Glenbrooks have readjusted the search process so that both timelines align. The district plans to conduct interviews in early February, with the goal of presenting the two finalists to the Board of Education by the end of that same month.

STEM scheduled to replace Chem/Phys Program
Katie Cavender, asst. news editor
The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Learning Community, an alternative advanced science course to the Chem/Phys course for freshmen, has produced good results so far this year and is poised to replace Chem/Phys-an intensive science track for gifted freshmen and sophomores-after this year's conclusion.
Like Chem/Phys, The STEM Learning Community is a multi-year track for freshmen that begins with Chemistry and Physics, rather than Biology. According to Jeffrey Rylander, Science Department instructional supervisor, the STEM Learning Community is focused on integrating science and engineering classes. For each level of a science course, there is an engineering class designed to go along with it. "[The ultimate end of] the engineering sequence [is] the engineering design and development course," Rylander said. "Students take all that they've learned in science and in engineering and take a real-life problem, develop a solution and actually a prototype of a physical device that is a solution to the real-life problem."
