GBN's Operation Snowball fosters friendships, builds connections
Every winter, more than one hundred GBN students pile onto a bus, leave campus and head to a campsite for a weekend they are promised will change their lives.
GBN's Operation Snowball, now in its third year, is a three-day retreat featuring special workshops, skits and speakers designed to foster an environment of making connections, furthering leadership skills and having fun in a safe way.
This year's retreat, themed "On Top of the World" and running Thursday, November 20, through Saturday, November 22, welcomed its largest group yet. More than 140 students and 20 staff came together to discuss overcoming obstacles, persevering through challenges and staying motivated so they can reach their goals.
Though the themes and dates change each year to allow for inclusivity and flexible club scheduling, event sponsor Bill Edison said the overarching goal of getting students out of their shells and helping them make friends remains.
"This is a way for a lot of students to find a source of support among their peers they might not have otherwise found during a regular school day," Edison said. "Many students say it is a highlight of their time at GBN and I think it certainly contributes something positive and special to the social-emotional health of our students and to the overall school climate."
Student Snowball leader Sam Klein, a senior, said his first experience at Snowball could be described simply: it was crazy.
"I had never seen so many kids getting along before and that is what I will always remember: the doors it opened," Klein said. "We have very nice and supportive peers at GBN but the concentration of them in one place was heart warming. There were people I knew and had classes with at school but never truly got to know on a more deep and personal level. Operation Snowball opened my eyes and ears to them and is the reason I have some of my best friends."

Coaches of Chicago inspire Pryma to write book
Roshan Modi, Managing Editor

When principal Paul Pryma first became an administrator at Highland Park, he left his passion for coaching basketball. After eleven years in administration, he decided to return to the court.
"I was watching a lot of programs struggle because the coaches running those programs struggled as leaders," said Pryma. "I felt that I could come back into coaching with a better understanding of leadership that would transfer into better teaching for kids." But Pryma said returning to coaching was not enough. He wanted to address the problem he saw in the way coaches approached their student-athletes by portraying the legacy of three of the best coaches he knew. Gene Pingatore, St. Joseph boys basketball Coach, Rick Malnati, Fenwick boys basketball Coach and Steve Pappas, former Deerfield boys basketball Coach, are all featured in Pryma's book, "Coaches of Chicago."
