GBS Community invited to "pay it forward"
A rich culture of giving has been a long-time tradition at Glenbrook South and this holiday season, GBS students and staff want to inspire a movement of good deeds.
From Monday, December 8, to Friday, December 19, GBS Key Club is challenging all students, parents, teachers and neighbors in the Glenbrook South and Glenview communities to complete random acts of kindness for others. Whether it's holding the door, giving compliments, allowing cuts in line, smiling at strangers or donating extra change, any act of kindness that is witnessed or received can be tracked on Twitter and Facebook through the hashtag #GBSRAK. "Key Club believes everyone has the power to make a difference in the lives of others every day," said Key Club sponsor Josh Koo. "No matter the size of the act, what is most important is the heart behind the act. We encourage everyone to step out of their comfort zones and do something to promote happiness in Glenview and spread joy to others this holiday season." Key club student leader Lori Steffel said she is most excited to see all the creative ways people decide to spread kindness. While it is championed as a GBS initiative, she said she hopes the kindness spreads outside of the school into the community. "I think this campaign will carry great weight and sentiment. Many people, myself included, love the idea of challenging themselves in this manner, but simply don't have the motivation or reason to do it. We would like this event to be that motivation," Steffel said. "I think everyone will take something away from this." "Most neighborhoods or communities do not have campaigns like this, so it is really special that we are having one," agreed sophomore student leader John Schurer. "RAK is a way to bring our community together and to show how good hearted people can be."

The student-newspaper publication was one of only six newspapers in the entire nation in its division to receive the honor, which was a program first.
Last year's school newspaper was produced under the leadership of editors-in-chief Julia Jacobs and Camille Park, both graduates of the class of 2014.
