Glenbrook students post consistently high ACT scores
Glenbrook South's average ACT reaches highest in school's history

According to the 2014 Illinois School Report Card released by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), Glenbrook South students perform consistently well above average on state tests.
GBS students earned their highest average composite ACT score for the second consecutive year posting a 25.0, an improvement from last year's 24.9. The state average composite score is 20.7.
"While test scores are not the only way we measure the success of our students, they do provide confirmation that the efforts we are making are having a positive impact on student achievement," said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle.
The Report Card lists the total enrollment of the Glenbrook High Schools as 4,843. The district graduation rate is 96 percent. On average, 96-97 percent* of Glenbrook graduates attend college.
The official State Report Cards link can be viewed on the district website.
*The data for this annual College Report is collected through a self-reported student survey of graduating seniors. For the first time, the 2014 Illinois State Report Card will list college attendance rates, which we expect will vary from the totals reported in this article. The reason for these anticipated discrepancies is the State Report Card's utilization of different data, specifically the National Clearinghouse Report.

Principal Wegley: Block schedule update
In order to successfully transition to the A/B block schedule, GBS staff planned for more than a year and have many successes to celebrate.
Our students and staff are to be applauded for their commitment to this year's new use of time.
As predicted, students are taking more classes. In fact, student registration levels increased in all subject areas. This increase reflects our belief that the block schedule supports one of our core missions: to develop student strengths and to support students in the exploration of their passions. As GBS continues to adjust to block schedule, we are monitoring the systems in place to support students and making adjustments as we proceed. The A/B block requires adjustments from all the groups that contribute to students' success: our faculty and support staff, the students themselves, and our families. We have listed below several resources that students and families can utilize as we adapt to our block schedule. -
The most important resource is CLASS ATTENDANCE:
-
Attendance in class correlates strongly with academic performance and higher grades.
-
Please make every effort to schedule out-of-school appointments during students' Student Resource Time (SRT) to maximize students' time in class.
-
If a student misses class, help him/her keep up and minimize makeup work:
-
Reference the courses' online resources (website, Google Classroom, Calendar, among others) to see the content covered and homework assigned prior to the next class session.
-
Contact his/her teachers through emails or phone calls.
-
If a student is having difficulty in a class, help him/her develop strong habits:
-
The student should get in the habit of doing homework for that course on the evening it is assigned, not the evening before it is due.
-
Student progress can be monitored by utilizing the parent portal of PowerSchool.
Thank you for your support as we partner to ensure our students are accessing resources and developing habits that maximize their success at GBS.
With Titan Pride,

Brian K. Wegley, Ed.D.
Principal

Winter weather school closing procedures
The decision to cancel school is made by the District Superintendent and is usually due to severe or extreme wind chills, snow accumulation or unsafe road conditions.
The goal is to notify families of school cancellations as early as possible, usually by 6 a.m. Parents can expect to be contacted by the District via an automated phone and email system. (NOTE: Now is a great time to make sure that your contact information is up-to-date.)
Information will also be shared through both schools' Facebook and Twitter accounts. Additionally, parents can obtain school closing information on the District and school website, the WGN Emergency Closing Center and local radio or TV news channels.
The District has built two emergency days into the calendar on Monday, January 12 and Monday, April 6. If no emergency days are used prior to January 12, then there will be no school on that date. However, if an emergency day is needed prior to that date, then school will be in session on January 12. If no emergency days are used between January 13 and April 6, then there will be no school on April 6. If an emergency day is needed during that time, then school will be in session on April 6. This calendar feature minimizes the need to add emergency days to the end of the school year in June.

College information for seniors
Teacher/Counselor Recommendations: Students requesting letters of recommendation from teachers or counselors need to give a minimum of two weeks notice to allow for sufficient time. Recommendation forms and online requests with January 1 deadlines must be given to the teacher by December 5 to allow enough time for completion before winter break.
Income Tax Forms & Financial Aid: Parents of seniors applying for financial aid should prepare their income tax forms early to facilitate completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after January 1, 2015, and any other financial aid forms requested by the college. The FAFSA is now requesting that applications be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Most colleges will accept estimated tax information on the financial forms and will verify later. Financial aid is given out on a first come, first served basis.

More than 500 handprints surround the words, each a mark of a personal pledge of a Glenbrook South student willing to take a stand against bullying.
The anti-bullying campaign is part of a monthly partnership between GBS Student Services department and student clubs or organizations designed to proactively address student social-emotional learning.

Changes to South pose challenges, advantages
Katie Cavender, Asst. News Editor
Various changes have been made to South this year, including block scheduling, a Student Resource Time (SRT) for most students and added para-pros in the hallways.
The block schedule, according to sophomore Anna Patent, makes school more engaging because students have alternating classes each day.

Federal funding available to students of military personnel
|
Due to the recent extension of a federal Impact Aid bill, Glenbrook High School District 225 is eligible to receive additional federal funding. The bill will provide federal funding to school districts that provide education to the children of military personnel as well as to other "federally supported students" who attend either Glenbrook North or Glenbrook South High Schools. In order to receive this funding, parents/guardians are asked to verify their high school student falls into the category of "federally supported students" by completing a survey and returning it to Vicki Tarver by December 1. Some examples include:
- Child resides with a parent who works on federal property.
- Child resides with a parent employed by the federal government.
- Child has a parent who is active (or reserve) duty in the uniformed military service.
- Child resides in federally subsidized housing.
- Child resides on federal property with a parent employed on federal property situated in whole or in part within the boundaries of the school district.
A copy of the survey can be found here. Anyone with questions may call Vicki Tarver at 847-486-4591.
