Board discusses police use of school security cameras
The Board of Education discussed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that would allow the Northbrook Police Department to access live video from security cameras at Glenbrook North during emergency situations. This draft agreement is similar to one crafted between Glenbrook South and the Glenview Police Department last fall, and is a direct result of continued cooperation between our schools and local law enforcement agencies.
"This type of arrangement demonstrates a continued commitment to the safety of our school community," said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle.
The agreement outlines the expectations of both organizations and the general parameters for use of the cameras. The Board will consider approval of the agreement in the coming months, with an expected vote in October.

Board reviews outsourced services
Each year, the Board receives a summary report of expenses for the district's outsourced bookstore and food service partnerships.
This past school year was the second year of an agreement with Becks Bookstores. In addition to leading book sales and buy-backs, they also serve as the main point of contact for the district's 1:1 initiative. As part of the discussion, the Board reviewed the average cost of textbooks since the 2007-2008 school year.
"Staff are making significant efforts to begin implementing electronic textbooks, as evidenced by a projected slight cost savings for each grade level for the 2014-15 school year," said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle. "Although the amount may be small at this time, the use of electronic textbooks has the potential to grow into a significant savings for students and families in subsequent years."
The district has a long-term relationship with their current food provider Quest Food Services, a vendor since 2007. After a commitment in 1992 to reduce a large program deficit, the district reports a $855,470 fund balance for the 2014-15 school year that is targeted for repair and replacement of cafeteria equipment over time.
"Quest has been a beneficial financial partner throughout the years, and what's more, they are always willing to work with us to improve food quality and selections for our students," said Ptak. "This year, they helped us implement a modified beverage selection to offer and promote healthier options in our cafeterias."
