Students and Staff Who Excel

The Board will continue to recognize students and staff this fall.  Until then, the Excel program will be on summer break. However, there is still much to celebrate at the Glenbrooks:

Debate duo earns national title

Glenbrook South seniors Chris Callahan and Brent Mitchell bested a field of 203 policy teams from across the nation to win the national policy debate title at the 2014 National Speech and Debate Association in Overland Park, Kansas.

Mitchell and Callahan remained undefeated throughout the tournament, culminating their season with a defeat over Roosevelt High School from Sioux Falls, SD in the final debate.  GBS defended the negative and won the final debate on an 11-2 decision.   The duo was also awarded the Unger Cup, given to one policy team in the country for their cumulative wins amongst four national level tournaments from the year.

Earlier this year, Mitchell and Callahan held a #1 ranking in the Baker Award standing, a poll that determines national ranking by considering teams' records, win rates and upcoming schedule. The title is a first in recent history. GBS finished third at the national tournament in 2012 and second at the national tournament in 2013, where the faced off against Glenbrook North HS for the national title.

The GBS Debate team is directed by Tara Tate and assisted by Jonathan Voss, Dylan Quigley and Richard Day.  Tate also received the Ted W. Belch Policy Coach of the Year.
