Principal Pryma: Welcome!
Paul Pryma mug

Welcome to the new school year! "Connections" has asked me to summarize the top five GBN educational experiences to look for in the 2014-2015 school year.

The request is challenging because there are so many events that immediately flood my mind when I ponder the nine months in front of us.

I'm looking forward to the talents of the class of 2018, the powerful leadership capabilities of our upperclassmen, Green and Gold Fridays, Marching Band morning march-throughs, continued athletic prowess by the Spartans in CSL and IHSA competitions, art work additions to the GBN Permanent Collection, Student Advisory Brainstorming, The V Show, Dr. Boyle's College Summary Report at the Parents' Association meeting in October, Quest's Pasta Toss, Loyalty Day, AM Jazz Band creations, New Booster Spartan gear, a possible snow day, and Homecoming decoration transformations.

Limiting the list to the top five is near impossible, but here goes..

5 Reasons to Look forward to 2014-15

#5 - Furthering possibilities of the Chromebook initiative, and its bridge toward student engagement and critical thinking.

#4 - Embracing the return of SPARTANS CONNECT on March 19, 2015.  SPARTANS CONNECT is a day dedicated to students and staff to share common interests and passions in order to build more meaningful and diverse relationships.

#3  - Continuing our focus on problem solving, writing, presenting, and reading, through the Eight Qualities of Literacy.  As Professor John Bean states in Engaging Ideas, "Often the struggle of writing, linked as it is to the struggle of thinking and to the growth of a person's intellectual powers, awakens students to the real nature of learning."

#2 - Basking in the sunshine of GBN.  This gorgeous campus is illuminated by the warmth of kindness, the genius of bright ideas, and the courage of risking failure toward the acquisition of new thinking.  We share this rare sunshine joyfully and unabashedly.

#1 - Learning and teaching.  My most treasured perks as principal are those moments free from meetings that allow me to walk these proud and open corridors listening to laughter, conversation, and debate emanating from passionate discourse inspired by thoughtful lesson design.  Teachers and students, you inspire me.  I'm grateful.

I encourage you to check your email each month for "Connections" newsletter, designed to inform parents about current activities, events, and opportunities at GBN.  The school website and district website are other valuable sources of information.

An important factor in the success of our school is the positive relationship we share with parents.  With all of our contributions, GBN will continue to be a place where students, parents, staff, and community members enjoy learning and working together.

As always, we value your partnership as we guide young adults through the journey of high school.  I look forward to meeting you at Parent Night in the Classroom, September 11, if not sooner.

With Spartan Pride,

New Mural tells special backstory

A special collaboration between a Glenbrook North science class and a class for students with special needs has led to the creation of a new piece of artwork to be hung in the GBN science hallway this fall.

As an end of the year project in May, 19 students in Dr. "Doc" Fiala's Brain Studies class partnered with students in the Teaching Life Skills (TLS) program to craft a mural depicting personal sentiments and lessons learned from the year.

Co-Ed Engine Team qualifies for Nationals

For the second time in program history an engine team from Glenbrook North has advanced to the National Championship, but with Mia Bakis, Michael Bazer, Sarah Jones, Thomas Kozel, Will Spears, and Don Steiner quickly piecing apart and putting together the 140 pieces of a Chevy 350 small block v8 engine in 29 minutes, it's the first time they've qualified as a co-ed team.

Varsity Football accepts Ice Bucket Challenge
When Matt Purdy, assistant varsity football coach, was nominated for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, he decided to make it a Northbrook affair.

After accepting the challenge and pouring an ice bucket on head varsity Coach Bob Pieper, Purdy called in the Northbrook Fire Department to help rain icey cold water on the entire football team. As part of the partnership, each student donated $5 each to the ALS Association.

Glenbrook Foundation premieres
Back-to-School Party

Northbrook and Glenview families are invited to attend the inaugural Glenbrook Foundation's All Community Back-To-School Party.

On Saturday, September 6, at 6 p.m., Glenbrook North will open its doors for an evening of fun games, open pools, an outdoor movie on the big screen, and a food truck fest for current and future GBS and GBN students and their parents to enjoy.

"The event was championed as a way to bring together families and introduce communities from both schools to the good work being done by the Foundation, said Foundation member Kristine Schwandner.

"The Back-to-School Party will be a fun end-of-summer evening; one last celebration before everyone gets back to their school routines," Schwandner said. "It will be a great opportunity for the community to mingle with their neighbors, and for the GBN and GBS students to open their high school doors for junior high and elementary students for a night of summertime fun together."

The Glenbrook Foundation is an organization that raises money to enrich and enhance the educational experience of all GBN, GBS and GB evening students.

Board approves tentative budget for 2014-15

At a meeting on July 28, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education approved the tentative 2014-15 budget.

The 2014-15 budget projects $110,573,201 in revenues and $109,848,161 in expenditures in the Operating Fund. Based on the tentative budget for 2014-15, the District forecasts an Operating Fund balance of $77.8 million as of June 30, 2015.

"Maintaining strong fund balances is a key financial strategy for our district as we face uncertainties such as increasing student enrollment and potential decreases in state and federal funding," said Board President Skip Shein. "By doing so, we greatly enhance our ability to remain fiscally stable as an organization."
