Principal Wegley: Welcome back, looking forward
Wegley

Welcome to the 2014-15 school year.  Preparing all students to persevere through challenges and explore their strengths and passions so they can better themselves and the world remains our central mission. Our educators are leaders in their fields, and we embrace a culture of civility, involvement and high expectations as we develop minds, character and passions.

There is much to celebrate on this front. Students at GBS continue to be extraordinary achievers. In 2014, they earned college credit for more than 1600 AP exams, excelled academically, and gave generously of their time in meaningful service.

Four reasons to look forward to 2014-15:

  1. Block schedule: After much planning, GBS has implemented the block schedule leading to more opportunities for students to explore their passions through expanded course selections.

  2. Chromebooks: The use of Chromebooks by all students will continue to open up tremendous opportunities for collaboration and learning for students and staff.

  3. Fresh faces: 34 outstanding new faculty members are joining the ranks at GBS and bringing their expertise, perspective and energy to their teams.

  4. Facility upgrades: Over the course of the summer, GBS has upgraded facilities and enhanced the campus with two new Project Lead the Way Labs to support our valuable engineering programs, expanded parking with over 250 new parking spots for students and built an inspiring new stadium entrance donated by three generous Glenview families.

You will find Glenbrook South to be a warm place of opportunity for all students. I invite each of you to partner with us by becoming involved at GBS by taking advantage of parent education programs and getting involved in our many parent groups. Check your email inbox at the end of each month for upcoming events and to celebrate achievements in Connections, our monthly parents' newsletter. You can also stay tuned to the GBS website for up-to-date information on what's happening in the schools.

This promises to be an outstanding year; I extend a warm welcome to all of you in the Glenbrook South family!

With Titan Pride,

Brian K. Wegley, Principal

Help Make the Most of Instructional Time

With the introduction of block scheduling, parents are encouraged to schedule students' outside appointments during Student Resource Times (SRTs). To help maximize uninterrupted instructional time, parents are also urged to limit calls and texts until their students' unscheduled times when cell phone use is permitted.

Student-produced video

addressed cyber-bullying

At the end of last year, in an effort to speak out against cyber-bullying, nearly a dozen students in Scott Glass's Media Collage class filmed and produced a video that was shared across the country on social media outlets.

Student Spotlight

Each month, this section features a piece of student-created work. This month's article is from
a May edition of Glenbrook South's student-run newspaper, the Oracle, and features a story about construction projects completed this summer at GBS. A new edition of the Oracle is distributed approximately every month and can be found in newsstands throughout the school or on their website.

Summer construction projects maximize

building capacity
Charlotte Kelly, co-news editor

Interior construction projects are set to take place at South over the summer to maximize classroom space as a result of the transition to the block schedule and growing enrollment, according to Principal Dr. Brian Wegley.

Computer labs are going to be converted into classrooms and programs like Peer Group and Project Lead the Way will have their spaces within the building expanded, according to Wegley. This will allow South to maximize capacity and prevent student opportunities from being affected with more classes offered and more students being taught next year.

Glenbrook Foundation premieres Back-to-School Party

Northbrook and Glenview families are invited to attend the inaugural Glenbrook Foundation's All Community Back-To-School Party.

On Saturday, September 6, at 6 p.m., Glenbrook North will open its doors for an evening of fun games, open pools, an outdoor movie on the big screen, and a food truck fest for current and future GBS and GBN students and their parents to enjoy.

The event was championed as a way to bring together families and introduce communities from both schools to the good work being done by the Foundation, said Foundation member Kristine Schwandner.

"The Back-to-School Party will be a fun end-of-summer evening; one last celebration before everyone gets back to their school routines," Schwandner said. "It will be a great opportunity for the community to mingle with their neighbors, and for the GBN and GBS students to open their high school doors for junior high and elementary students for a

night of summertime fun together."

The Glenbrook Foundation is an organization that raises money to enrich and enhance the educational experience of all GBN, GBS and GB evening students.

Board approves tentative budget for 2014-15

At a meeting on July 28, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education approved the tentative 2014-15 budget.

The 2014-15 budget projects $110,573,201 in revenues and $109,848,161 in expenditures in the Operating Fund. Based on the tentative budget for 2014-15, the District forecasts an Operating Fund balance of $77.8 million as of June 30, 2015.

"Maintaining strong fund balances is a key financial strategy for our district as we face uncertainties such as increasing student enrollment and potential decreases in state and federal funding," said Board President Skip Shein. "By doing so, we greatly enhance our ability to remain fiscally stable as an organization."
