Meeting Highlights - June 9, 2014
Board releases statement on Future Enrollment Initiative
(May 19, 2014) District 225 is committed to fostering a high-quality Glenbrook experience for every student that supports his or her academic, extracurricular, social, and emotional development. Providing opportunities for each student to have that quality experience has been a guiding principle in the District's decision-making for many years.
The current student enrollment forecast for District 225 indicates that the student population at GBS will continue to grow for the next several years at a rate that may meet or exceed the current building capacity, while the student population at GBN will diminish. This widening gap in the school populations raises questions of equity regarding opportunities and conditions that will exist in academics, activities, and athletics.
The Board of Education has undertaken an extensive study. This study has included gathering a broad variety of data, drawing upon the expertise of demographers, articulating philosophical parameters, soliciting input from the community, and engaging in wide-ranging discussions during public meetings. The Board's intent has been to use a deliberate, thorough, careful, transparent, and participatory process to analyze, understand, and determine the issues concerning student enrollment.
Full Statement
Sophomores enjoy device upgrade at reduced cost Incoming Glenbrook sophomores will benefit from a better device, as the Board of Education approved the distribution of a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e for the 2014-15 school year. While sophomores were originally expected to retain their Samsung Chromebook for one more year, the district was able to secure a more durable device at an actual cost savings of $45,000.
"Providing sophomores with an upgraded device will offer them increased functionality in the areas of digital reading, math and science, and position them well for the next three years," said Superintendent Dr. Mike Riggle. "The fact that we could secure the device for a reduced cost from the original business plan makes this a win-win situation for students, parents and the district."
Glenbrooks promote healthier beverage options
In an effort to enhance healthy beverage options for students, starting with the 2014-15 school year, the Glenbrooks plan to increase the number of healthy options (such as water, reduced sugar items, and milk) while reducing the variety of less healthy options (such as diet and regular sodas) in the school cafeterias. The schools will also limit the serving sizes of less healthy options to 12 ounces or less and plans to expand its flavored water offerings (such as Izzy's and LaCroix).
"We met with students to listen to their thoughts on beverage offerings at the schools, and while they enjoy having access to a wide-variety of choices, they supported the idea of stronger marketing efforts to promote healthy options," said District Director of Business Operations Dr. Kim Ptak.
An estimated 80 percent of students purchase a daily beverage from the school cafeterias.
Community newsletters mailed to every district household During the past week, every resident and business within the district boundaries received a printed copy of the spring community newsletter, The Glenbrooks. This publication is mailed twice a year to ensure all taxpayers have access to information about their public high schools.
