Glenbrook Musical presents: Q&A with the canine stars
Students of GBS and GBN come together each year to present a musical performance, and this week they will - like, totally - woo audiences with the adaptation of "Legally Blonde," based on the novel and 2001 film by the same name.
 | Tulip, the Toy Fox Terrier |
"Legally Blonde" tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. In the process of defending a murder trial, she discovers how her knowledge of the law can help others. The musical has been nominated for a Tony award seven times and is known for its upbeat and energetic storytelling.
Adding to the fun and fast-paced script is the addition of four dogs who will respectively characterize the roles of Bruiser and Rufus.

Friday, the Chihuahua
|
Finding a way to sit down with a few of the stars of this year's Glenbrook musical can be a bit difficult. Frequently rambunctious, the dogs of "Legally Blonde" have required more attention, affection and treats than traditional high school actors.
The cuddly Mojo, Yoyo, Friday and Tulip shared thoughts about their experience in "Legally Blonde" for a Q&A segment.

"Young and Beautiful" - Prom 2014
The Glenbrook South Prom "Young and Beautiful" will take place on Friday, May 16, 2014 from 7:00 p.m. until midnight. The Prom will be held at the Crowne Plaza O'Hare, 5440 N. River Road in Rosemont.
Prom includes dinner and dancing with music provided by The Party Faithful. The dance is chaperoned by GBS administrators, staff and the school resource officer. Formal attire is required. This is a school-sponsored event; all school rules apply.
Prom bids went on sale Monday, April 14, and may be purchased in the bookstore through Friday, May 2. Bids are $65 for an individual and $130 for a couple. Table reservations will be available for groups of ten. Students will electronically reserve tables of 10 from May 5-9.
Tips for parents:
· If your child will be riding in a limousine, talk to the driver to make sure he or she knows your expectations for behavior in the limousine. Give the driver a phone number to call if there is a problem. Often drivers are coming from other bookings (weddings, parties, etc.). Please check the vehicle for leftover alcohol. Please remember that school administration may search limos, buses, etc.
· Your child will most likely want to change clothes after Prom and will use an overnight bag. Please consider checking these items.
· Consider discussing rules for the prom: your own rules, the school rules, and the consequences for violating them.
· If your child is planning to spend the night at a friend's house after Prom, consider checking with that friend's parents to make sure a responsible adult will be present.
· Please remember that parent expectations are still the number one reason adolescents choose to say "NO."

Summer Reading program for GBS students
Bring on the best sellers! When students read for pleasure over the summer it helps continue their educational growth and prevent "summer slide."
With that in mind, GBS announces the 7th annual Summer Reading program: an initiative asking students to select one book from a student-approved list, read it over the summer, and join a one-time lunch discussion in September. The list of books spans several genres for a variety of readers and the lunch will include entertaining discussion, good food and prizes. Books read for this program also count toward the Glenview Public Library's summer reading program.
Students should sign up with their book selection by June 1. SIGN UP FORM.

Teacher honored for humanitarian work
Nearly ten years ago, two Glenbrook South students approached Glenbrook Academy teacher Matt Whipple about starting a club to address the turmoil in Darfur. Whipple called upon his experience in global affairs and years rallying against the genocide in Rwanda, and helped them launch Stand for Peace, a group dedicated to improving the lives of people in developing nations.
Now, the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center has honored his efforts and named him the recipient of the 2014 Power of One Award. The yearly honor goes to an individual who by speaking out or standing up, has made a difference against genocide.

Board evaluates outlook of Chromebooks
Aaron Ach, asst. news editor
This year, South began the "1:1" technology initiative when non-seniors received a Samsung Google Chromebook. The Board of Education, with the help of technology specialists, is currently deciding if the incoming freshman class will use the current Chromebook, a later version of it or an entirely new device.
The Board expects to make a decision in June. Nearly 130 people have piloted potential devices between both buildings: 32 department tech facilitators, 32 administrators and roughly 32 students across the district, according to Ryan Bretag, South's director of instructional technology.
