Students submit prestigious international proposal

Several times a week, the members of Fermionic Matters met after school, putting their minds together to complete an entry for a prestigious international competition. Their entry required research, creativity and highly specialized knowledge. To win, they need to demonstrate motivation, dedication and deep understanding. Their potential prize will not come as a plaque, banner or award to be displayed in the hallways of GBN, but rather, as what some may call an experience of a lifetime. The prize for this team of 16 physics-minded students is the opportunity to run their very own experiment at the European Council for Nuclear Research, or CERN. To coincide with its 60th anniversary, CERN is hosting a "beam line for schools" competition, a program awarding one group of students a ten-day trip to the headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to run a particle physics experiment on a fully equipped fixed-target beam. To be selected, CERN scientists will vet teams using the same process for current scientists at the lab. After reviewing applications, the chosen team will be announced in May. "Essentially, CERN supplies a specific beam and detector that shoots high energy protons at up to 10 Giga electron volts but we supply the experiment," said GBN science teacher Nate Unterman, who announced the opportunity to his students and has been overseeing their proposal. On January 31, Fermionic Matters joined 455 other teams from across the world by submitting a 140-character tweet of intent. |

Fun with math: Stats class investigates Oreos
Math took a turn for the delicious when the students in Steve Goodman's statistics class at Glenbrook North took on the tough question: are consumer brands advertising the truth?
The students' hypothesis: Nabisco "Double Stuf" Oreos were selling less than double the "stuff" inside a regular Oreo.
With help from parchment papers, knives and scales, the students worked through their steps. They scraped off the insides of regular and "Double Stuf" Oreos, weighed the white insides in grams, and worked together to plot all their samples on a graph.
As more samples filled the board, the conclusion became fairly obvious.

Meditation Club offers "Soul Food"
Hana Bezark, Copy and Page Editor
The meditation club, "Soul Food: Cultivating Potential," was created in February to assist in relaxing minds and bodies through activities ranging from hypnosis to yoga, according to club sponsor Jon Robin Walker.
According to senior Rob Klein, a typical meeting consists of a meditation session led by either a teacher or a meditation expert. The leader introduces a certain meditation technique and then the skill is practiced. Afterwards, a discussion takes place regarding how people can implement the meditation concepts into their lives.
