GBN alum to appear at 86th annual Academy Awards
The Oscars are a night of glitz, glam and stars and on Sunday, March 2, Glenbrook North alum Nathan Flanagan-Frankl will be in the middle of it all. The 22-year-old student at Chapman University was one of five students announced as a winner of Team Oscar, a competition put together by Ellen DeGeneres, Channing Tatum and the Academy of Motion Pictures that asked students to submit a 60-second video about how they're going to contribute to the future of film in exchange for the experience of a lifetime. "It was one of those things I heard about and told my roommate, parents, peers, teachers - everyone - I was totally going to do," Flanagan-Frankl said. "It was a cool challenge and more so, I knew exactly what my answer to the question was." For the entirety of his senior year, Flanagan-Frankl has been preparing a thesis documentary on how Asians are perceived in the entertainment industry. An Asian American adopted into a Jewish family in Northbrook, his one-minute video summarized notions he'd had since childhood. "Growing up, it was hard to find any lead character in films that looked like me," he said in his video. "As a filmmaker, I'd like to create stories that diversify the role of the hero. My heroes will represent all different stories on this planet and allow kids like me to go to the movies and see someone they can relate to." His message of diversity resonated with The Academy and show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron personally awarded him a coveted Team Oscar spot over Skype. As a member of Team Oscar, he will deliver Oscar statuettes to celebrity presenters at the Academy Awards, broadcast live on ABC. VIEW FULL STORY |

The United States national team senior group practices a routine in preparation for the 2014 Rhythmic Invitational from Feb. 12 to Feb. 16 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The group earned a spot in the competition after placing highly in an international competition.
Over four years ago, juniors Monica and Jenny Rokhman moved over 2,000 miles to their new home in Northbrook. The twin sisters had previously lived in San Diego, Calif., but moved in order to further their rhythmic gymnastics careers. The Rokhmans, however, were not the only rhythmic gymnasts to move to Northbrook.
Junior Natalie McGiffert moved from Topanga, Calif., and alumni Laura Tutunikov ('13) and Alisa Kano ('13) moved to Northbrook as well for gymnastics. They joined senior Sharon Dassouli, who was already living in Northbrook, to form the United States national team senior group, the highest level group in the nation.
