Senior projects offer GBS students chances to grow,
give back
As a senior at Glenbrook South, Gabby Gottfried wanted to combine her love for music with her passion for helping those in need.
The 2013 grad dedicated four weeks to a senior project - developing a fundraiser for Arquetopia, a non-profit organization that funds art training and supplies for underprivileged youth in Mexico.
Her vision for "Music for Murals," a live art and music festival that allowed students to leave their mark and raise cultural awareness, brought in more than $1000 in donations.
This summer, she'll travel thousands of miles to see her contribution put to work at the Arquetopia headquarters in Oaxaca, Mexico as their Supporter and Fundraiser of the Year.
"The money we raised and collaborative art pieces we created at the concert funded art projects and apprenticeships in troubled Mexican neighborhoods," she said.
But even with her growing accolades, what Gottfried said she hopes students can take from her story is their own ability to create opportunities and help others with a senior project.
"Hopefully seniors can get encouraged when spring rolls around," she said. "I'm so glad Glenbrook South gave me the opportunity to spend my last few weeks of school to develop and execute this idea. "
The unique senior project experience allows students the privilege to spend two to four weeks focused on a passion, skill or talent, said Dawn Hall, Instructional Supervisor for Career and Technical Education, who oversees the senior project initiative.
"Senior projects are intended to be a capstone experience where students demonstrate the culmination of work here at GBS, explore future careers through internships, or fulfill a service project," she said.
