New courses proposed for 2014-15 school year

On Monday, January 13, the Glenbrook High School District 225 Board of Education reviewed a list of new courses recommended by the administration for the 2014-15 school year.

Glenbrook North

The Career and Life Skills department recommends a new series Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses, designed to meet the needs of students pursuing studies in engineering and technology related career paths. Four honors courses have been recommended including: Intro to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Civil Engineering and Architecture, and Engineering Design and Development.

Glenbrook South

The Applied Technology department recommends adding two honors PLTW courses to its existing engineering offerings, to complete the four-year sequence. Civil Engineering and Architecture will add an architectural component and Engineering Design and Development will serve upper class students as a capstone course.

The business department recommends Investment Strategies, a course designed to help students develop wealth management, investing, and financial planning skills.

The Physical Education department recommends Weight Training and Conditioning II, a continuation to the introductory course.

The Science department recommends adding Honors Physics (for freshman enrolled in PLTW) and Astronomy 171, an option for students electing to earn honors credit.

The Social Studies department recommends Advanced Placement (AP) US Government.

Each year, District 225 administrators and teachers evaluate 20% of course offerings and make recommendations to revise and enhance the curriculum.

"Conducting an annual course review helps the district maintain the comprehensive and rigorous array of course offerings our community expects of the Glenbrooks," said Assistant Superintendent Rosanne Williamson.

Whether they suggest the addition or revision of courses, by completing this annual cycle every course is reviewed at least every five years.

The recommendations brought forth in this cycle would have little to no associated costs to the District. The Board is expected to take action on this agenda item at the next scheduled meeting on January 27.
