At the meeting on Monday, December 2, the Board recognized

Glenbrook North High School for their participation in the Honor Flight Program.

On October 30, approximately 300 Glenbrook North students welcomed an Honor Flight carrying World War II veterans that landed at Midway Airport. Veterans entered the baggage claim area to the cheers, banners and rallying cries of GBN students, who arrived at the airport via a coordinated effort by the school.

The Honor Flight network, an organization that brings veterans to visit the national war monuments honoring their service in Washington, D.C., selected GBN as the first school to participate in a pilot program that lets students lead the celebration.

"The goal was for students to heartily welcome and thank the veterans, for their bravery, love of country, and commitment to the freedoms we enjoy as Americans," said GBN Principal Dr. Paul Pryma.

District to review the Educational and Life Skills Program

As part of an on-going effort to ensure high quality services for students, the Glenbrooks will be conducting a review of its Educational and Life Skills (ELS) program and the ELS Transition Program. These programs provide academic and life skills instruction to high school and transition students with special needs. It teaches such skills as household management, job training, grocery shopping, public transportation use, and building relationships in the community. The Northern Suburban Special Education District (NSSED) currently administers the program for both Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South students.

The review will begin this month, and will include engagement with various stakeholder groups including current students and families, staff from the Glenbrooks and NSSED, middle school families, and other school districts who utilize a similar service. The purpose of the review is to determine if the growing student enrollment supports the development of an in-house program in place of the outsourced one administered by NSSED.

"The driving force behind this study is to determine the most efficient way to provide high quality services for our students with special needs," said Director of Special Education Jennifer Pearson.
