Students shine at golf state championship

At the IHSA golf state finals this month, Brian Ohr and Nick Hardy took a swing at victory - and succeeded.

The Glenbrook North seniors claimed two of the top three spots at the Class 3A championship in Bloomington; overall their efforts adding up to a fourth place win for the Spartans. But success is par for the course for Ohr and Hardy, who have served as leaders on the boys' golf team the last four years.

They have helped the golf team go to state three times since their freshman year, said coach Justin Gerbich. In 2012, GBN was the team to beat and this year, he noted, the two seniors took charge of a group that was two-thirds new to Varsity.

"The competition in our conference is very tough; to advance is an accomplishment in of itself," he said. "What we did this year, with such a young team, I was excited about. It's hard to get to state, let alone get to the top."

With the top 12 teams and 100 golfers in Illinois competing at the state finals, Ohr came out on top, clinching the first place win with his last stroke. For someone who has openly acknowledged being comfortable following behind Hardy, a well-known favorite - this win means a lot.

"Being able to win the state title individually is such an honor for me. Different from any other tournament I have played in, knowing that winning this event will put me in the books representing GBN is an amazing feeling," he said.

Love your Chromebook

An update from the first nine-weeks

During the first nine weeks of our one-to-one learning initiative, staff have noticed

numerous advantages to the classroom experience. A common student device has provided a means for sharing, creating, collaborating through both virtual and face-t
o-face interactions, engaging students in student-centered lessons and observing an overall culture shift in the classroom.

As with anything innovative, there are also challenges such as slightly elevated breakages of the device (when compared to other districts using Chromebooks or similar devices). While the reasons for the breakage vary, the most common concern is screen damage due to transport (e.g. placement in backpacks, picking up the device by the screen). Chromebooks are delicate electronic devices and require care during use. We encourage parents to share the link called Caring for the Chromebook with their student.

Winter Weather School Closing Procedures
The decision to cancel school is made by the District Superintendent and is usually due to severe or extreme wind chills, snow accumulation or unsafe road conditions.

The goal is to notify families of school cancellations as early as possible, usually by 6 a.m. Parents can expect to be contacted by the District via an automated phone and email system. (NOTE: Now is a great time to make sure that your contact information is up-to-date.)

Information will also be shared through both schools' Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Additionally, parents can obtain school closing information on the District (www.glenbrook225.org) and school website (GBN www.glenbrook225.org/north), the WGN Emergency Closing Center (www.emergencyclosings.com), and local radio or TV news channels.

The District has built two emergency days into the calendar on Monday, January 13 and Monday, March 31. If no emergency days are used prior to January 13, then there will be no school on that date. However, if an emergency day is needed prior to that date, then school will be in session on January 13. If no emergency days are used between January 14 and March 31, then there will be no school on March 31. If an emergency day is needed during that time, then school will be in session on March 31. This calendar feature minimizes the need to add emergency days to the end of the school year in June.

Food Drive aims to hit a high note

Students at Glenbrook North will be going for a record number of donations during the annual Food Drive, which runs from November 7-26.

To raise both cash and food items, student will host a series of activities and events, including Foodapalooza, where bands will play in exchange for donations during lunch periods in the cafeteria and Student Center the week of November 12-16.

Students welcomed Honor Flight
On Wednesday, October 30, a Honor Flight carrying World War II veterans landed at Midway Airport and entered baggage claim to the cheers, banners and rallying cries of Glenbrook North students.

The Honor Flight network, an organization that brings veterans to visit the national war monuments honoring their service in Washington, D.C., selected GBN as the first school to participate in a pilot program that lets students lead the celebration. More than 300 students and teachers showed up to provide the veterans a proper homecoming.

Students enjoyed free pizza from Lou Malnati's and free drinks from Sunset Foods. The opportunity was presented to GBN by longtime supporter David Hochberg.

The green and gold hallways of Glenbrook North introduced a new color this fall: chrome.

According to Ryan Bretag, director of Instructional Technology, District 225 purchased 4,100 Chromebooks, 3,900 of which are being leased by freshmen, sophomores and juniors from school this year.

Bretag said that the search for devices to "enhance learning" began three years ago when students and teachers experimented with Netbooks, iPads and Chromebooks.

"We're doing so much with Google, so much online, so much internet stuff that [the Chromebooks] emerged at a pretty reasonable cost point, and they did exactly what we asked them to do, so we looked at those," Bretag said.

District News

Federal funding available to students of military personnel
Due to the recent extension of a federal Impact Aid bill, Glenbrook High School District 225 is eligible to receive additional federal funding.  The bill will provide federal funding to school districts that provide education to the children of military personnel as well as to other "federally supported students" who attend either Glenbrook North or Glenbrook South High Schools.

In order to receive this funding, parents/guardians are asked to verify their high school student falls into the category of "federally supported students" by completing a survey and returning it to Vicki Tarver by December 1.

Some examples include:

  • Child resides with a parent who works on federal property.
  • Child resides with a parent employed by the federal government.
  • Child has a parent who is active (or reserve) duty in the uniformed military service.
  • Child resides in federally subsidized housing.
  • Child resides on federal property with a parent employed on federal property situated in whole or in part within the boundaries of the school district.

A copy of the survey can be found by clicking here. Anyone with questions may call Vicki Tarver at 847-486-4591.
