Glenbrook students go home with chrome

During the past week, more than 4,700 Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South students completed the annual registration process affectionately known as "book sale." This year, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors took home a new kind of book - a ChromeBook - as part of a one-to-one digital environment initiative recently adopted by the district.

"At Glenbrook South, we watched as students eagerly opened the box containing their new ChromeBook," said Director of Instructional Technology Ryan Bretag. "We are thrilled to see that our students are just as enthusiastic as staff about the possibilities these devices will provide."

Freshmen, sophomores and juniors leased a ChromeBook at a cost of $25 per student. Students qualifying for free and reduced lunches were provided a device at no cost. Seniors had the option to purchase a ChromeBook at a reduced price of $232 negotiated by the district.

Board reviews outsourced services

Each year, the Board receives a summary report of expenses for the district's outsourced bookstore and food service partnerships.

This past school year was the first year of an agreement with new bookstore vendor Becks Bookstores. As a result of this partnership, the district saved $49,000 from the previous contract.

"We are pleased with the level of service during our first year with Beck's," said Director of Operation Dr. Kim Ptak. "They will also be taking on more responsibilities this year as the distributor of the ChromeBooks initiative."

The district has a long-term relationship with their current food provider Quest Food Services, a vendor since 2007. After a commitment in 1992 to reduce a large program deficit, the district reports a $657,000 fund balance for the 2013-14 school year that is targeted for repair and replacement of cafeteria equipment over time.

"Quest has been a beneficial partner for our district, not only helping to contain our costs but also improving the quality of foods, the selection, and the management of this important service to our students and staff," said Ptak.
