Connecting Through Research: "How the microbial environment shapes the infant gut microbiome: Birth, pets and cleaning products" - March 27


Dr. Anita Kozyrskyj and her team will present on environmental exposures which affect the infant gut microbiome; namely, duration of labour, household pets and household cleaning products.

HCU Wellness Champion Nominations

The Healthy Campus Unit is now accepting nominations for 2017 Wellness Champions. Nominate a student, staff member, faculty member, student service, or group that contributes to a culture of wellness at the University of Alberta!

A Wellness Champion makes campus a better place by spreading wellness through their daily interactions, planning events and activities, or creating policies that integrate well-being into the classroom, workplace and social spaces. Achieving balance in Indigenous child health research: Eliminating power and privilege, honouring ceremony


Dr. Jonathan McGavock will discuss colonial history in Canada and the impact on Indigenous health research. The consequences of power and privilege imbalance in the university-community partnership will also be discussed, as well as best practices for achieving respect and reciprocity.

ECHA Terrace Community Garden: HELP WANTED!

We need your help! With plans under way for a bigger and better terrace garden this year, we are looking for volunteers to help build garden boxes.
Do you:
  • Have experience building garden boxes?
  • Have suggestions for design?
  • Have materials to donate (wood, troughs, large bins, etc.)?
Please get in touch if you would like to help construct garden boxes for our north and south terraces. All help is greatly appreciated! What is a vermi-composter? It is a house for Red-Wriggler worms. This South American species of worm can eat their weight in food each week, and to create high quality compost for your house plants.
We will provide all the tools, supplies, and knowledge for you to take yours home and maintain it.

Student Success Study: Participants Needed!

What does student success look like? What is helping make student success possible on campus? What might be standing in the way of student success?

If you are interested in participating in the research that the Healthy Campus Unit is doing in partnership with the PLACE lab in the School of Public Health related to student success, please email us at [email protected] for more information.

The time commitment for this study is about 3-4 hours total. We are looking for students, staff, and faculty to participate and offer their insights. In thanks for your participation, we will provide a $20 gift card for the University of Alberta bookstore.
