Teaching across the spectrum raises understanding and engagement

Cheryl Sadowski, associate professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences recognized the gap in knowledge and training in ambulatory assistive devices (AAD) for Pharmacy students. To find the answer, she discussed this with a colleague in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, Allyson Jones.

Associate professor
Cheryl Sadowski
"We asked ourselves, 'why can't we have the students engaged in teaching this training,'" says Sadowski, which prompted an instructional design and assessment project that was published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education in December 2015.

Innovative data mining tool to investigate adverse birth outcomes and environmental variables

Members of the Children's Environmental Health Clinic organized a meeting for the DoMiNO (Data Mining and Neonatal Outcomes) project - a partnership between national and international interdisciplinary researchers along with knowledge users, supported by CIHR/NSERC.

The project, led by Alvaro Osornio-Vargas (Pediatrics) and Osmar Zaiane (Computing Sciences), investigates relationships between multiple environmental exposures and adverse birth outcomes (e.g. preterm birth, low birth weight and small for gestational age) in Canada, by using data mining methods. The team met this August in Edmonton to discuss the latest version of a data mining visualization tool designed for this project.

The tool will help to identify relevant combinations of multiple environmental variables. This will serve for the creation of new hypotheses towards the understanding of the geographic diversity of adverse birth outcomes occurrence in Canada. Results from the project are expected by March 2017.
