Acute Critical Events Simulation held at HSERC

Last week, the Heath Sciences Education and Research Commons (HSERC) hosted one of Canada's largest annual simulation events. Collectively the Point of Care Ultrasound course and the Acute Critical Events Simulation (ACES) training course were a three-day event that brought together a broad range of specialist physicians from across Canada.

To support the simulation activities and lectures, ACES used HSERC's simulation lab, equipment, high fidelity mannequins and standardized patients in collaboration with Alberta Health Services' eSIM team. The ACES course was hosted with the cooperation of the University of Alberta, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Alberta Health Services.

HSERC is a collaborative environment for health science students, scholars and practitioners; HSERC is a key initiative of the Health Sciences Council, dedicated to advancing interprofessional team-based education and care.

IP Care Processes package added to Virtual Interprofessional Educator Resource (VIPER) collection

Collaborative Practice Toolkit
Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health are implementing new interprofessional care processes in care units throughout the province. The new processes include Rapid Rounds, Bedside Shift Report, and Patient Bedside Whiteboards.

The Health Sciences Education and Research Commons (HSERC) partnered with these two organizations and, in a project funded by Alberta Health, developed a complete education package for employees and educators. The education package covers the new interprofessional care processes, as well as the communication and collaboration skills to support their implementation. The package includes 3 self-study modules, materials for 3 facilitator-led sessions, an educator guide, and handouts.

If you're a student who may work at AHS or Covenant Health in the future, or for anyone interested in learning more, the full education package is available on the HSERC website, in the Virtual Interprofessional Educator Resource (VIPER) collection: http://www.hserc.ualberta.ca/TeachingandLearning/VIPER/IPCareProcesses.aspx

Prepare for the Fall term with your librarian!

Developing a Course Curriculum? Librarians can provide library orientation/info lit sessions during curriculum classes. At a higher level, librarians can assist in developing information-related curriculum for students. For example, the Faculty of Medicine Liaison Librarians led some of the discovery learning blocks in medicine. They can assist in assessment of curriculum/assignments; find ways to incorporate evidence- based practice, and grade assignments.

Dental hygiene graduates continue to achieve and exceed high standards

Scoring above the national average in all categories of the board exam isn't really news anymore. For ten consecutive years, the Dental Hygiene diploma grads have scored above the national average on the certification exam. Ten years of continuous outstanding performance is no coincidence, it is now considered normal.

"We set high standards for our students," says Dr. Sharon Compton, director of the Dental Hygiene Program at the U of A. "So when results like this happen, we are all so proud because we know the students work hard, and their above average exam results are proof."
