The Faculty of Nursing Undergraduate Student Summer Series: Launchpad to Research

The Faculty of Nursing Undergraduate Student Summer Series: Launchpad to Research provides an excellent learning opportunity for undergraduate students.  Students will gain essential knowledge and skills helpful in launching their careers in research.

Each week, lunch will be provided at noon for no additional fee, which will generally be followed by a 25-30 minute presentation from a FoN PhD student or PDF.  There will be time for students to network amongst themselves and/or faculty members present and enjoy the opportunity for discussions regarding student research projects, issues, and questions related to the research process.  Formal session presentations will run at 1:00/1:15 - 2:00 p.m.

In past years this series was open only to FoN undergraduate honours students.  This year, however, we will be opening registration to all undergraduate students within the health sciences who are involved in summer research.  Registration for Faculty of Nursing students is free.  A $100 registration fee will be charged to students in other faculties.

Sessions will be offered every Wednesday from June 3 - July 29, 2015.  During the final session on July 29, 2015 the students will present their summer research in a poster presentation open to all faculty and staff.

Registration is required by May 27, 2015

The Tri-Council Agencies [CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC] have announced their new Open Access policy:

This means that anyone receiving funding from these agencies after May 1st, 2015, will be required to make their research publications openly accessible within 12 months of publishing.

You have the option of publishing in an Open Access [OA] journal [author fees are identified as an "eligible expense"], OR you can put your research in an institutional repository, like the UAlberta Libraries' ERA. This means you can still publish in non OA journals as long as the journal allows you to self-archive at least a post-print version of your research article. Most big journals allow the sharing of author post-print copies---some information on that from Sherpa RoMEo here: http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeoinfo.html.

Our ERA staff will help you identify what research publications can go in ERA--just contact erahelp@ualberta.ca; they can deposit it for you.

You can look up journals' copyright policies yourself by using Sherpa RoMEo. For example, if you look up Nature, it tells me that an "author can archive post-print (ie final draft post-refereeing)." But there are some stipulations, like including a DOI and referencing the Nature journal, etc. Again, ERA can help you do this. Information sessions from the Library on this are forthcoming. Iin the mean time, please contact Sandy Campbell, Library Liaison to the School of Public Health and Faculty of Medicine at sandy.campbell@ualberta.ca.

Are you the Peter Parker to Spiderman? Diana Prince to Wonder Woman? If you're needing a place to change and store your attire before or after work, and you find the phone booth option lacking privacy, check out the lockers available to staff  in ECHA.

The facilities do not have showers, however sinks and vanities are available to freshen up after you've hit the road and are ready to transform to your professional alter-ego!

Locker rentals are from 1 May - 30 April of each year and are $40 a year, which includes a refundable $10 deposit.

Please email ECHA.Admin@ualberta.ca for more details!
We'll keep your poster posted!

Did you know that all bulletin boards in ECHA are cleared on the last Thursday of each month?
If your poster needs to carry over, please let us know (echa.admin@ualberta.ca)
We'll make sure your information stays put for as long as you need it posted.
