Readership survey at a glance

For the past three years, the ECHA news is seen by up to 1000 people every month. Our "open rate" has remained consistently higher than average for a newsletter of this kind, which means we must be doing something right. The survey confirmed that the information we provide is useful to two very different groups, with different needs. This comes as no surprise, given that our audience has always included both the administrative and support staff in ECHA, and the academic staff. Click here to view the full infographic.

Among the comments included in the survey responses were:
"Thanks for your work on this project - it helps to build links between the various departments and disciplines in ECHA."

"It's unclear whether the newsletter is aimed at sharing news of collaborations across the HSC members or whether it is focused on providing info to tenants of ECHA about protocol in the building."

". . . the short crisp bulletin is the right idea. It would be good to encourage a broad range of disciplines to contribute."

"I enjoy the tone of the newsletter, a bit of quirkiness is appreciated."

"Reading about other teams helps to identify who works where."

Thank you again for your input. We are always looking for stories, so if you'd like to submit yours, please do:  echainfo@ualberta.caerta.ca.

UAlberta School of Dentistry adds another graduate program to its roster

The School of Dentistry now has a new Oral Medicine Graduate Program. The program builds upon the framework of their previous TMD/Orofacial Pain program and will incorporate the additional scope of clinical competencies to provide the graduates with eligibility for Oral Medicine specialist certification by the Royal College of Dentists.

Dr. Tim McGaw, professor in Oral Medicine and Pathology at the school, will be the director of the program.

"I'm really excited to be part of this new grad program," said Tim McGaw. "The legacy of our excellent TMD/Orofacial Pain program, and the integration of our School of Dentistry within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, has provided us with a unique opportunity."

This program is a much needed dental specialty as there is an increased need for cooperation between practitioners of oral health care and physicians dealing with complex medical cases.

INT D 410 and beyond: students and faculty co-present on the topic of Interprofessionalism

Interprofessional Health Team Development (INT D 410), a course created in collaboration between the Health Sciences Education and Research Commons and the health science faculties, offers students the opportunity to develop the collaborative practice skills that will prepare them to meet the challenges of their future work environments.

Inspired into action two students, Meghan Chow and Michael Wong, approached HSERC with an idea for a new course stream. They shared an interest in focusing on Community Health while building skills in leadership and teaching. Elaine Chiu, a former dietitian who facilitated INTD 410 prior to returning to school enrolled in an elective IPE course in which the stream curriculum development was integrated as project-based coursework. Together these three Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry students, working closely with HSERC, faculty and community partners, adapted existing curriculum into the Community Health stream for INT D 410.
