Readership survey results

Thanks to everyone who completed the ECHA News readership survey. The results are in and, in a nutshell, most of our readers say they read the ECHA News most or all of the time. More importantly, 64% find most, or all of the content useful.

There were some great suggestions for ways we can improve, which we will incorporate into a new design scheduled for roll out in the new year. The survey also delivered some new contributors, so we look forward to more diverse content from our occupant groups. Missed the chance to have your say? You can send your story ideas, suggestions, kudos and complaints any time to echainfo@ualberta.ca.

The full breakdown of all the results will be in the November News.
Dr Hien Huynh's team approach brings doctors, nurses and dieticians together to save young lives.

"It's more than just having the right medication," says Dr. Huynh,  head pediatric GI at the Stollery Children's Hospital. "It's really having a dedicated team with the right treatment plan and the right protocol to follow these patients along."

UAlberta dental students score higher than Canadian average on board exam

The University of Alberta's dental students have again performed strongly on the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) exam - a requirement for a license to practice dentistry in Canada.

The NDEB exam tests foundation science knowledge, and applied clinical science knowledge and judgment. It's a rigorous exam, challenging the knowledge and skills accumulated through the four-year program. Preparation for the exam demands months of effort.

"Our students' average on this exam was at the top end of the range," said Steve Patterson, Associate Chair, Academic. "The last few years we have seen fairly consistent performance by our students at this level. These exam scores, plus the recent highly successful accreditation of the dental program tells us that we are preparing our dental students very well for their future contributions to the dental profession."

"We start talking about the NDEB in their first year of dentistry," said Patterson. "They are aware of the high standards required of dental graduates in Canada and they work hard to learn and to prepare for their future practices."  Congratulations students. Bright smiles all round.

Purging documents?

The ECHA SAO can help!

Getting ready for that annual purge? Our secure shredding and recycling bins can't handle unusually large quantities, so you'll need some help. Here's what to do:

  • Box all documents and secure the boxes with tape.
  • Indicate on both the top and side of the box that the contents are for Confidential Shredding.
  • Advise your department representative (this varies from one group to another but will typically be your ECHA contact, your Admin Team leader, receptionist or the person who manages your copy and workroom areas).
  • Store confidential shredding in a secure location (locked office or storage area).
  • Your representative will then work with the ECHA SAO to schedule a pickup time.
A scheduled pick up requires a minimum quantity of 10 standard boxes. (this is flexible within reason) There is no maximum.

Support International Open Access Week

Oct. 20 - 26, 2014!

What's "Open Access (OA)" and why is there a week dedicated to it? We live in an age of information - it's everywhere - but research or scholarly publications are often only accessible with a fee. Open Access Week is a global event promoting open sharing - the generation of free online access to, and use of, scholarly research. It seeks to highlight the positive impact that OA may have on academia, science, industry, etc. as more people gain access to research.

This year's International OA Week Theme is "Generation Open" - this year, we'll learn about and reflect on the importance of open access to students at all levels of their academic careers as well as early-career researchers.

The University of Alberta Libraries is hosting a number of free events to both celebrate and get the word out about OA, including a Generation Open Panel on open data, open textbooks, and open access research, a webinar about the role of new kinds of impact for early-career researchers, a panel of Open Data activists and advocates, a talk by Dr. Sam Trosow of UWO - and even an OA movie night!"
