Nursing and its research have never been charged with achieving so much. The best and most efficient ways are now urgently needed to:
- Mobilize and empower nurses to use research, to innovate, and to lead
- Ensure that talented nurses can readily access the best education to do research
- Develop and harness the methods and studies necessary to address the most pressing health needs
- To meet these challenges, new approaches are needed - in short: Nursing Research 2.0

Keeping our MFD's running smoothly
We've had some problems recently with our Xerox machines malfunctioning or, worse, quitting work completely. Our Xerox technicians advise that copying items that do not fit to a predetermined page size is to balme. Who knew? For example, when an item smaller that a typical 8.5 x 11 page is copied, the machine is forced to "pull" extra toner (ink) to the exposed areas; this can adhere toner directly to the fuser. If this happens often, the fuser will no longer be able to "melt" the toner to the paper, and it will stop working. What to do? Place a standard sheet of paper behind the smaller item. The copier will then select for the page size indicated and leave the area white. This uses less ink, saves money, and can preempt copier breakdowns.

Thank you to our volunteer Floor Wardens
A big thank you everyone who volunteered their time to be an ECHA Floor Warden. We did really well during out September 22nd drill, evacuating the facility in just under five minutes! That's a fantastic time given the sheer size of the building. This was the first fire-drill for many new staff, and for some of our volunteer Wardens. If you have any questions about the drill, or want more information about volunteering to become a Floor Warden, please contact Tamara Mitchell.

Come out and support International Open Access Week 2014 from Oct. 20 - 26, 2014 with the University of Alberta Libraries!
What's "Open Access (OA)" and why is there a week dedicated to it? We live in an age of information-it's everywhere-but research or scholarly publications are often only accessible with a fee. Open Access Week is a global event promoting open sharing-the generation of free online access to and use of scholarly research. It seeks to highlight the positive impact that OA may have on academia, science, industry, etc. as more people gain access to research.
This year's International OA Week Theme is "Generation Open" - this year, we'll learn about and reflect on the importance of open access to students at all levels of their academic careers as well as early-career researchers.
The University of Alberta Libraries is hosting a number of events to both celebrate and get the word out about OA, including a Generation Open Panel on open data, open textbooks, and open access research, a webinar about the role of new kinds of impact for early-career researchers, a panel of Open Data activists and advocates, a talk by Dr. Sam Trosow of UWO - and even an OA movie night!"
Watch for notices on the Library's web-site - Open Access Week Events at the University of Alberta
