Welcome to Summer

As always - it's important to get up and away from the desk (and work) from time to time during your day. Take a quick stroll outside, or take a moment to sit in the sunshine on one of the two terraces located on the third level of ECHA.  Eat your lunch, or have a short coffee break - or better yet - hold that collaboration meeting while soaking up some free Vitamin D!  Terraces are also  bookable for those times when a private space would be nice.

Contact the ECHA Shared Admin office for details on booking your place in the sun.

Multidisciplinary approach key to finding solution for food insecurity

Kue Young, Dean, SPH

A new report by an expert panel of the Council of Canadian Academies has shed light on Aboriginal food security in Northern Canada.

The report of the Expert Panel on the State of Knowledge of Food Security in Northern Canada revealed a high degree of food insecurity among Aboriginal people in the North and investigated the solutions to the problem that have been undertaken by various circumpolar regions.

"Any attempt to tackle this problem must acknowledge its multidisciplinary nature," says Kue Young, dean of the School of Public Health and panel member. "By developing this framework, we're acknowledging the interrelationships that determine whether someone has enough to eat," says Young."   Read more here.
Having issues with the Xerox Machines

Just a reminder that if you experience any difficulties with a Xerox machine, contact the ECHA Shared Administration Office to report the issue. Please be prepared to provide as much detail as possible: e.g. unable to clear paper jam: provide location of jam; machine leaving streaks on paper indicate if it is when printing or copying and whether horizontal or vertical etc. The more information you can provide, the faster we can assist!

Do you know that ECHA has guidelines for your leafy friends?

Potted plants are fine in your workspace as long as the following conditions are met:

  • Plants must be healthy and well cared for; clean up dropped leaves or spent flowers.
  • The plant stays in your space: watch climbing and creeping plants to make sure they respect boundaries!
  • Put a tray under the pot to capture any run off from watering your plant.
  • The University of Alberta does not support the use of pesticides, fungicides, or chemical fertilizers. There are other organic and healthy plant care and nutrition options.
  • Flowers produce pollen and this can be an allergy issue for some people; if anyone has environmental or specific allergies due to your plant you may be asked to take it home.

RefWorks Helps You Manage Your Citations

RefWorks is a citation management software (licensed for use by anyone at the University of Alberta) that saves researchers time. When you have done a literature search in a bibliographic database (eg: Medline, CINAHL, Sport Discus, etc), you can export the references to your RefWorks account. When you write your paper, RefWorks allows you to add in-text citations. When you are finished your paper, RefWorks will format your citations and bibliography to whichever citation style you want to use (APA, MLA, as well as many specific journals' styles).

To find out how to set up your RefWorks account, contact the John W. Scott Health Sciences Library  jwsinfo@ualberta.ca

RefWorks classes are periodically offered throughout the year. Watch the Libraries Workshops page for upcoming classes.
