American Geriatrics Society publishes position statement on IntD Team training

The Partnership for Health in Aging, an American coalition of over 30 organizations, has published a position statement on Interdisciplinary Team training. They conclude that Interdisciplinary Teams "are essential components of an integrated and comprehensive care system for older adults in the United States."  They go on to recommend: "a wide variety of organizations - including professional associations, credentialing and licensing groups, and accreditation bodies-should rapidly and significantly increase their advocacy efforts in support of IDT education."

The same holds true in Canada and throughout the world; this is why health team education is an essential aspect of the Health Sciences Council's work at the Health Sciences Education and Research Commons. Through the Continuing Care Stream of the Health Team Development course (IntD 410) students at the UofA learn interprofessional approaches to team-based care for geriatric patients.  This stream is facilitated by the Institute for Continuing Care Education and Research (ICCER).

Helping students navigate the treacherous waters of social media

Social media is a fact of life for more or less everyone these days.  In a recent survey conducted by the Canadian Medical Association, some 80% of respondents agreed that the use of social media "poses professional and legal risks to physicians." As the use of social media increases, it is important that health sciences students understand the implications of "sharing".

In 2013, the Interprofessional Pathway Launch offered a social media station that provided tips, and challenged students to test their social media savvy in the context of a health sciences profession. (download teaching resources here) In an article published in Medical Education, an interdisciplinary team of health educators evaluated the approach; they note that while most students found the information useful, others seemed confident they already knew how to use the medium wisely. Their confidence may or may not be realistic; authors Tara Hatch, Heidi Bates, Sheny Khera and Jennifer Walton questioned the students' ability to accurately assess themselves. As social media becomes more fully entrenched as our communications vehicle of choice - it's a topic that will attract much more attention and study.

Work on exterior glass panels

You've probably noticed some work going on on the east side of the building. Some of our beautiful glass panels have faded and are being replaced by the contractor, at their expense. The work will begin on May 26, and continue for approximately one month. Access to the building will not be affected during the work period.
