Congratulations to the School of Dentistry

Dr Paul Major The School of Dentistry, and its three programs-Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)Dental Hygiene, and Orthodontics recently went through their accreditation review.

"Every seven years, the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) reviews our program to ensure it meets established criteria and educational standards," says Paul Major, Chair of the School of Dentistry. "The outcome of all three reviews was an overwhelming success! In fact, the DDS program had zero recommendations to report. What this means is we are on the right track with what we are doing and from here, we can only get better," he says. "We are committed to making our programs the best they can be so that all students who attend the school receive a high-quality education."

Students and educators to present together at leading global conference

Students Elaine Chiu, Meghan Chow and Michael Wong (FoMD)  will join Tara Hatch, Sharla King and Joanne Davies (Health Sciences Education and Research Commons) to deliver a paper on
Authentic engagement of student stakeholders in interprofessional education initiatives, at the All Together Better Health Conference in Pittsburgh this June. The students will present on student perspectives related to motivation for developing student-lead IPE initiatives; the evolving team process; and recommendations for future student engagement in the design and delivery of IPE curricula.
ECHA drives collaboration

Ask Alex Clark, Associate Dean of Research, FoN, if the shared spaces in ECHA make a difference and his answer is definitive. "Yes - absolutely. Our office  and the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology (IIQM) have cooperated on a number of successful publishing and grants sessions. We had students and faculty from Nursing and the School of Public Health, and panelists from across different disciplines. We had record attendance and such an interesting session." This move to include others was the direct result of the proximity of other faculties and schools in ECHA. "This kind of collaboration doesn't just happen", says Clark. "We decided to extend the invite out to include our neighbours. The diversity of the participants led to a great discussion, and an opportunity to share across our traditional boundaries." Clark quotes Steve Jobs who believed space should be designed to encourage "unplanned collaborations".  And Alex Clark agrees: "Not many people are working in single discipline research anymore," he says. "Having those other disciplines in the same building makes a huge difference in the way we think, act and interact around collaboration."

If you have a story about collaboration in ECHA, let us know!

ECHA is UofA's  "waste diversion star!"

The Office of Sustainability has sorted, separated and crunched the numbers and "ECHA is our waste diversion star" says Jessie Kwasny, Waste Diversion/Recycling Coordinator with F&O.

In 2013, ECHA recycled or composted :
  • 53 MT of Paper/Cardboard
  • 0.540 MT of Plastic
  • 0.286 MT of Glass/Light Metals
  • 24 MT of Organics
And that doesn't include refundable beverage containers!

ECHA is the only building with organics collection available to occupants. Soon we will see organics bins at Engrained as well.

If you're still not sure what goes in organics - have a read.

K-cups - what to do about them?

It turns out the plastic portion of the one-cup coffee pods in NOT recyclable. So, you can remove the coffee grounds and filter for organics, but the rest goes into landfill. Find out more here.
