Health Care Team Challenge success

The winning team "We have a plan for that!": Bianca Au (Pharmacy), Kristyn Kurio (Medicine), Sarah Johnston (Occupational Therapy) and June Chen (Pharmacy)
On February 8, 2014, students from Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, the School of Public Health, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Nutrition, and Speech Language Pathology took part in the university's first Health Care Team Challenge.

"One of our objectives at the Health Sciences Students' Association is to promote health team activities that help students understand each other's roles in delivering health care - we want to establish positive relationships that we will carry forward into our practice after graduation," says Tracy Zhang, VP Academic for the Association. "This event will encourage U of A student representation at national and international events, where we can show the world that the we have very strong interprofessional health education programs."

The Health Care Team Challenge was supported by the Health Sciences Education and Research Commons; director Sharla King was impressed with the number of participants the Challenge attracted: "It's an indication of how important these interprofessional experiences are to our students."

Monika Keelan, Associate Professor, Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, was one of the judges for the challenge."We were really impressed with the quality and diversity of the presentations and we loved the cohesiveness of the winning team," she says.  "The future of health care is in good hands with these creative teams of young health care professionals."

Congratulations to all the students who took part, and to the Health Sciences Students' Association.

Anatomy, Humours, and Chemical Interventions: The Changing Face of Medicine in the Elizabethan Age

Join us for the opening reception of "And there's the humor of it": Shakespeare and the four humors, that will be on display at the John W. Scott Health Sciences Library from February 17-March 29, 2014.

When: Thursday, February 20, 2014 - 5:00 PM

Where: Bernard Snell Hall, Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Ctr.

Following a brief welcome by Vice-Provost & Chief Librarian Gerald Beasley, Dean of Arts Lesley Cormack will give the opening lecture on "Anatomy, Humours, and Chemical Interventions: The Changing Face of Medicine in the Elizabethan Age," illuminating the medical culture that informed Shakespeare's work.

Light refreshments will be served after the lecture (courtesy of the History of Medicine Program) and guests will have an opportunity to view the exhibit. Please RSVP online at http://library.ualberta.ca/studenttraining/section/index.cfm?cid=214.

This travelling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine explores how the four bodily humours -blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile - once thought to define peoples' behaviours, influenced the roles and emotions in Shakespeare's plays. More information about the exhibit and associated events can be found online at: http://guides.library.ualberta.ca/shakespeare.
