Hacking Health: there's an app for that

On a chilly weekend in November the Health Sciences Council warmed up ECHA with a buzz of hacking - the legal kind. Over 170 people, including health care professionals, patients, students, software developers, web designers and a host of mentors from the private and public sectors converged for a hackathon for health. Hacking Health is designed to improve healthcare by inviting technology creators and healthcare professionals to collaborate on realistic, human-centric solutions to front-line problems. Challenges met solutions and beautiful things happened. Interdisciplinary teams formed around project ideas and set to work for a day and a half of intense, focused effort. It was an interdisciplinary tour de force.
Judges Lili Liu, Jane Drummond and Don Juzwishin grill the teams on demo day. No easy wins here.
To see the complete list of projects, visit the HHYEG sparkboard page. While you're there, sign up to get involved. Events are happening in Calgary and Edmonton in the new year.

Security during exams and holidays

With exams upon us, we have noticed an increase in the number of people using ECHA shared spaces. As you know, access to the upper three floors of ECHA is restricted after hours; shared spaces are intended for the use of occupant groups and their guests. There is ample teaching, study and meeting space elsewhere in the building.

Given the size of the building, it is very difficult to monitor space, especially after hours. Pedway access from adjacent buildings and the LRT platform has increased the number of people entering the building.

Please adopt a 'neighbourhood watch' approach. If someone is in a meeting room you have booked, don't hesitate to ask them to leave. Ask student groups to relocate to study space in the building.

(Maps are here)

This is also a reminder that it is possible for people to access these floors by tailgating, or by simply staying put in a secluded room accessed during open hours; they can then let others in after most people have left for the day. With many people away from the office for holidays, it is particularly important to be watchful.

In the unusual, but not unprecedented event that someone becomes belligerent or threatening when asked to leave, you should call Campus Security - 780-492-5050.

In ANY real emergency, call 911; but remember - if you call 911 by accident DO NOT HANG UP. Wait for the dispatcher and tell them you are not in danger.

Always remember to secure your valuables, and keep your eyes open for suspicious activity.

First- Aid Responders needed in ECHA

The University of Alberta is in the process of ensuring all facilities comply with the safety requirements of the Occupational Code of Alberta. Two items that need immediate attention are the requirements to have trained first-aid providers and first-aid supplies available.

Recruitment for volunteers will begin in early 2014.We will offer Information sessions in January 2014. While those who currently hold a 'Standard' first-aid certification are strongly encouraged to participate, everyone is welcome to attend these sessions, learn what is required and consider volunteering for this important role.

If you have any questions or would like more information please email ECHA.Admin@ualberta.ca.

Watch for more details in the New Year.
