TD Studentship winner says interdisciplinary approach brings autism research closer to the clinic
 | |
For Lori Sacrey, the most rewarding thing about research is seeing results in action.
|
Lori Sacrey is a post-doctoral fellow working with Lonnie Zwaigenbaum, professor and director of autism research in the University of Alberta's Department of Pediatrics; she is also this year's recipient of the TD Studentship for interdisciplinary research. The $10,000 grant is awarded annually by the U of A's Health Sciences Council to a student who has an active role with an interdisciplinary health research team, who will be taking part in a health research project and who demonstrates a strong interest and potential to excel in interdisciplinary health research. HSERC in the Journal of IP Education
Collaboration between institutions and disciplines is essential for a truly interprofessional experience for health sciences students. Sharla King, Director of the Health Sciences Education and Research Commons (HSERC) published early results of just such a partnership, the Interprofessional Health Education Partnership (IHEPS) 's Save Stan simulation event, in last month's issue of the Journal of Interprofessional Care. This unique event brings students from NAIT, MacEwan, Norquest and the U of A together with professionals from Alberta Health Services for a fast-paced day of team learning. Read more...

It's Safety Week and Protective Services reminds us all that we have a role to play. This month's reminder from the Good Neighbour Guidelines is all about staying safe.
- During normal open hours, anyone can access most areas of ECHA. It's important to adopt a 'neighbourhood watch' approach.
- Never lend your access card to anyone, including family or friends.
- Keep your eyes open for people who look lost. It's okay to challenge strangers with a polite but firm "Can I help you?"
- Open workspaces have multiple locking drawers and cabinets. Sensitive, confidential and private documents and valuables must be locked out of view when you are not at your desk.
- After hours, be extra vigilant. Watch out for tailgaters (people who follow you through a door you've opened using your access card).
For more information about security, please see the University Protective Services web site. |
Lockers for staff
Do you need a place to change and store a change of clothes before or after work? We don't need to know if you are the real Spiderman or Catwoman; lockers in ECHA are available to staff with no superhero-related questions asked. The facilities do not have showers, however sinks and vanities are available to freshen up when you're ready to transform to your professional (or crime-fighting) alter-ego! Locker rentals are from 1 May - 30 April of each year and are $40 a year, which includes a refundable $10 deposit. Please email ECHA.Admin@ualberta.ca for more details!

Celebrate Open Access Week October 21-27, 2013!
Open Access (OA) will maximize research investments, increase the exposure and use of published research, facilitate the ability to conduct research across available literature, and enhance the overall advancement of scholarship. Many research funding agencies, academic institutions, researchers and scientists, teachers, students, and members of the general public support a move towards Open Access. Open Access Week is an opportunity for all members of the community to promote greater participation.

New maps show students where to study in ECHA
Student study spaces are located on levels L1, 1 and 2. With the exception of those who have allocated touch-down spaces on levels 3, 4 or 5, students looking for somewhere to study should be directed to the lower three floors. Study space maps are found here.

Wondering what to do with those plastic catering supplies?
The plastic bowls, trays, serving spoons, tongs etc left behind after catered events can be recycled. Please wash them first and then put them in the plastics bin. Or, wash them and take them home for your next picnic!
More information about what you can recycle and what goes where.
Composting
ECHA is one of the few buildings on campus that has composting bins. You might be surprised to know what is compostable.
More information about what goes in compost at UofA.

Google got it
Thanks to everyone who reported the error in the Google info for the Edmonton Clinic. Looks like the mass of red ink caught their attention. Now if they will just remove the "H" that indicates ECHA is a hospital, we'll be done.
