New approval process for special event bookings

The application process for booking space in ECHA for special events has changed. Going forward, all applications will be forwarded by the ECHA Shared Administration Office (SAO) to the appropriate ECHA APO for review before approval. The downloadable form can be found here.
Good Neighbour Guidelines

When our occupant groups moved into ECHA back in the fall of 2011, we provided hard copies of our Good Neighbour Guidelines. In our next few issues of ECHA news we will focus on some of the most important of these and provide additional details. This month, we're talking about scents in the workplace.

Scent-free policies are becoming more common in public spaces; this recognizes the reality the some people suffer from environmental sensitivities. The health affects for these people can be severe and result in lost work time. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety at the UofA has produced a brochure that outlines the University's approach to scents in the workplace. You can find more information at the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. If you are asked to refrain from using scented products, please remember that it is not personal. What smells lovely to you, might be ruining your neighbour's day.

If you would have any questions, or comments about the guidelines, or a suggestion as to other important "good neighbour" behaviour, we'd love to hear from you.
Scented items can aggravate sensitivities. Please limit use of scented items.

Thanks to Alberta Fish and Wildlife for transferring the six baby geese from our green roof to their new home; they were quickly adopted into another family of goslings. Now they have access to fresh water and have no risk of falling off onto pavement. And, ECHA occupants can once again enjoy access to the South Terrace.

Records for Life Contest

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is seeking help to redesign the look and feel of child health records. A redesigned health record will not only increase accuracy but also make medical records easier to interpret and use.

Accurate and accessible records are needed to maintain accurate health histories for children, identify those who need to be immunized, and those who have missed immunizations or are off schedule. When the record is unclear, inaccessible or unused, it's harder to reach children with life-saving vaccines.

Submit your innovative ideas that will:

  • improve the child health record;
  • strengthen information systems; and
  • empower health workers and families to protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases and ultimately save lives
Winners will receive up to US $50,000 and have part or all of their design piloted and scaled in as many as 10 countries by 2018. Find more details about the contest on the Gates Foundation website.

Proposals Due: October 31, 2013
