There are many things that I am good at in my day to day routine. There are a few that I am really good at. But there are even more things that I have been good at, but am not any longer.
I have had many jobs, hobbies & interests. Each of these acquired for me a new set of skills. Skills that were specific to that function. As long as I was actively involved in the pursuit of that area, my skills became increasingly honed and accurate.
This idea is relevant in every day life in that I must continue to practice the skills that I wish to keep.
Martial Arts is no exception. In one form or another, I practice every day. It may be going through a long list of forms and techniques, or it may be as simple as practicing my Ki Breathing.
Most of us are familiar with the idea of "The devil is in the details". I have heard that saying all my life, and you know what?
It Is Right! Although it is very important to see the "Big Picture", it is equally important to understand and see the small details that create the underlying framework that most things are built on. Again, the Martial Arts are no different. The details that we train will continue to move us toward mastery. Mastery of What is the question. If we take the time to ask questions, practice at home and continually push ourselves on the practice floor, then we will definitely make progress towards our goals. If not, then we are likely to have another list of skills that we used to know, but can no longer perform.
So make a decision today to make a list of the top 10 skills that you feel need the most work, and take the next six months to track your progress. I can assure you that if you make a concerted effort towards staying current in these areas for 6 months, then you WILL see positive results!
