Greetings!
I regularly tell my students that the primary difference between adults and children is that the adults are just a lot taller.
Now obviously this statement is meant to get the child's attention and make them laugh, but there is also a great lesson in this statement. As adults, we get angry, sad, selfish, ugly, we don't get along well with others, we throw fits, etc, etc.
If you look at the list above, I am sure you can find a few of these things that you are guilty of, and I KNOW you can find a few that others around you are guilty of. Now if you were to list out the most common reasons for children and adults getting in trouble, I would bet a large sum that the lists would very close identical.
Many Adults, myself included, often make the mistake of forgetting what it was like to be a child. We take our position, and ourselves in genera,l way to seriously. Now I am not saying that you shouldn't be serious about your responsibilities, but that we need to remember where we came from.
We all started out as "Beginners". There was a time in your personal life, when you were the "New Guy". You had no idea what was going on and depended soley on the help and teachings of others. This should have held true in your professional life. When you were new in your field of work, you once again were left to the advise and coaching of your superiors.
In each of these situations you were put in a situation where you had to allow yourself to be open to help and suggestion.
"All Winners Start As Beginners"
Now that we are all grown up, most of don't want to revisit that place where we were not in control and had to depend on others. The flaw in this thinking is that without "Risk", there is no "Reward".
Throughout my Professional Career, I have always made a concerted effort to remain a "Student". I "Want" to be a beginner in something at all times, because that means that I am constantly expanding my knowledge base, and even when I am studying in the Martial Arts, I make a specific point to receive information like a beginner. With an open mind and a willingness to listen, there is no end to the people who are ready to help me grow as a person.
Although at 38 years old I am anything but a beginner, I will not let that slow me down. I will excel in life because I am willing to take "Calculated Risks", in an effort to reap the rewards.
Respectfully,
Sa Bum Nym Jason
